It’s that time of the year when we start seeing in the press and on the net lists of the best and worst things of the past year. From the tens of thousands of books that are on the market, online retailer Amazon has picked the Best Books of 2013. The full list includes 100 titles, but if you want to decide for yourself which will make it to your holiday list, see the top 5 best books for 2013.

“The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt – this is a 784 page novel about crime, tragic loss, and friendship which everyone describes as “amazing”, “shocking” , and “powerful”. Most certainly, this would be the best work you have read in the past decade, so take a look. Don’t be surprised if it makes you stay up all night.

“And the Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini – it’s a story about a man who gives away his daughter to a wealthy man in Kabul. It’s an ambitious novel by the author of the international bestseller “The Kite Runner” which will take to a palce of war, separation, birth, death and love.

“Thank You for Your Service” by David Finkel – this is a unique nonfiction account of the day-to-day hope and pain of soldiers upon their returning home by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Good Soldiers”.

“Life after Life” by Kate Atkinson – this is a multilayered novel about a woman having multiple lives and how her choices and fate affect her in each successive life. It’s amazing to think about what happens after we die, and most of all, what happens if we are born again?

“Pilgrim’s Wilderness: A True Story of Faith and Madness on the Alaska Frontier” by Tom Kizzia – the story is a remarkable look on American cultural myths by veteran Alaska journalist T. Kizzia. He reveals the story of a seemingly perfect Christian family in the wilderness of Alaska – a man calling himself Papa Pilgrim, his wife, and their thirteen children. But what happens? Well, it’s up to you to find out; we can only tell you it’s an amazing tale of horror and adventure!

Those are Amazon editors’ picks for the best titles of the year. They are available in hardcover, audio format and of course, as e-books. However, if you are searching for a Christmas gift, one option is the best – the good, old printed book, wrapped beautifully for someone special.
