Dubai registers a 15% rise in business licenses issued in August 2013


The Department of Economic Development (DED) witnessed a 15 per cent increase in licenses issued in August 2013 compared to the same month of 2012 as economic activity in Dubai remained on an upward curve. While 996 licenses were issued in August 2012, 1,148 were issued in August 2013 reflecting increasing investor confidence in Dubai.

The tourism sector saw a 29 per cent increase in the number of licenses, the highest among all sectors in August 2013, while the professional sector accounted for a 17 per cent rise, followed by the commercial at 15 per cent.

The total number of licenses amended in August 2013 was 4,430, while the total number of renewed licenses reached 6,399. The total number of business registration and licensing (BRL) transactions reached 41,993, compared to 35,847 in August 2012, an increase of 17 per cent.

The number of trade names issued in August 2013 reached 4,840, up 27 per cent from August 2012 (3,805), and the number of initial approvals increased 23 per cent to 2,008 from 1,629.

The total number of commercial activities licensed in August 2013 was 2,922, with General trade leading the list of the top 10 licensed activities (140 licences) followed by Dyes & paints (126), Carpentry and flooring (119), Tiling of floors and walls (118), Installation of suspended ceilings and light cut-outs (116), Sanitary extensions & wares (110), Installation of air conditioning systems, ventilation and air purification (109), Installation and maintenance of electromechanical equipments (89), Plaster and roofing works (88), and Installation of wallpaper (86).

The number of professional activities licensed in August 2013 reached 772. Cleaning services for buildings and residences activity led the list of the top 10 licensed activities in this category with 57 licences, followed by Restaurants (41), Cafes (35), Transactions follow-up services (20), Business services (18), Electrical repair and extensions (16), Printing and copying services (14), Beauty and personal care centre for ladies (14), Selling snacks (13), and Sewing women’s clothes (12).

In the tourism sector, Inbound tourism was the leader with 13 licenses, followed by Travel and tourism agent (5), Hotel management, and Leasing of hotel apartments with one license each.

In the industrial activities segment, Confectionery industry, and Metal and welding workshop led the list of licensed activities with two licenses each, followed by Drilling of oil and natural gas Industry, Repair and maintenance of oil wells and natural gas, Strengthening oil wells and natural gas industry, Manufacture and packaging of milk and milk products, Furniture, Carpentry, and Electrical adaptors industry with one license each.
