Google to make passwords endangered species

For years, tech and web users have been relying on passwords to protect their personal and business information. However, it seems that passwords are no longer safe enough. The number of password hacks is increasing and with them that of the web and identity crimes.

However, Google will try to change that. The search engine giant is working on a new login method which promises to offer more security than the traditional passwords.

The company is currently searching for a better login alternative. According to a material published on IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine, Google is developing pass devices.

The new devices will be used to authorize a computer to access an account. The gadget is said to be very compact. Users will be able to embed it into cards, rings and etc. From Google commented that this new technology will enable a safer and easier Internet connectivity.

However, let’s say that you forget or you lose your device or someone steals it. What happens then? You will need to report that it is missing. Even then, someone could gain access to your online world.

Google is also considering this problem. The company is working on a different password alternative. It consists of a chip in your smartphone. When placed close enough to a computer, the chip will log you into your account.

Even though this technology seems smart at first glance, it may be hard for Google to popularize it. In the past, there were a number of other companies which have introduced password alternatives. However, they could not pick up and were quickly forgotten. To avoid that, Google Inc. will need to convince other websites to use it too. In that way more users will be attracted to the service.

Meanwhile, Google introduced a special protocol used for authentication via devices. However, this technology is created independently of Google. It doesn’t require any software or hardware to work. Users only need to have a browser that supports the particular login technology.
