Why is iPhone 5 release date such a big issue?

Imagine how many iPhone 5 will sell during the first weekend

Looking back at the previous dates of iPhone releases, it doesn’t seem very much feasible for Apple to release a next generation of iPhone or iPhone 5 soon.

  • October 4 2011: iPhone 4S
  • June 10, 2010: iPhone 4
  • June 8, 2009: 3GS
  • June 9, 2008: iPhone 3
  • January 9, 2007: iPhone

The smartphone market is yet to absorb (at large) the iPhone 4S and to get enough of the older models of iPads.

However, Apple announced that it would hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 11 through June 15 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. Tickets sold out in 2 hours. Industry insiders and high-tech commentators keep speculating what would the company announce, and would it launch next generation products. Among the possible new releases are rumored: smaller cheaper Mac book Pro and iPhone 5.

The iPad 5, or whatever the next generation iPad may be called, is a hit rumor, because of two very significant reasons:

  • The new device is expected to generate enormous revenues for the company, authorized resellers, black market traders, and not the least, media outlets.
  • The iPhone 5 is also expected to maintain the company’s reputation of a leader in the smartphone market. At present, Samsung sales generate higher numbers than Apple’s.

When the iPhone 4 went on sale, Apple sold 1.7 million in the first weekend, counting pre-orders. The iPhone 4S sales smashed that record and reached “over 4 million,” according to the company. Can you imagine what number will an iPhone 5 register? With Apple’s popularity and share prices rising at a such fast pace, it won’t be a surprise if sales cross a 10 million mark during the first weekend.
