Summer is almost over, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be looking for hot shopping deals right now. In fact, September marks the beginning of the long holiday shopping season and there are tons of items you can find in great sales. Before you start spending, however, you also need to consider the worst buys in September.

Few people know that the summer season is the most unfortunate time for shoppers, but with the first days of September, retailers start offering discounts even on popular merchandise. This is a smart tactic, luring customers to stores in an attempt to earn their trust and loyalty for the big Black Friday sales. And this will benefit shoppers, as well – right now, you can find back-to-school sales, Labor Day promotions and coupons, and even early Halloween-themed sales.

But as in any other time of the year, some items are better bargains than others. There are several items, you should definitely NOT purchase in September. But first, let’s see the best deals right now.

Summer clearance in apparel, footwear

Stores start clearing out their summer collections in order to make way for the next season’s hottests. So, it’s easy to find huge discounts on summer clothing – tops, T-shirts, shorts, swimsuits, and sandals. Jewelry is also more affordable right now, as this is one of the several months without any huge holidays. In comparison, the highest prices for rings, necklaces, earrings, and so on, are in February (Valentine’s Day), May (Mother’s Day), June (graduations) and October – December (Christmas).

Summer items

Besides clothes, retailers are offering low prices on traditionally summer products such as patio furniture (chairs and tables, umbrellas, wicker products, firepits), grills and barbeque accessories, as well as pool and gardening equipment. Garden plants, flowers and bushes are also a great bargain, as the weather cools and they are no longer that popular.

Kitchen and houseware items

Various décor items such as pillows, mirrors, rugs, and vases can be purchased at lower prices. Everything from silverware to linens and kitchen appliances are also discounted – retailers will try to clear out any items, targeted at college students. Of course, new models of stoves, refrigerators, and microwave ovens start to arrive in store from September, so last year’s stuff will be more affordable.

Back-to-school items

Although back-to-school sales began in July, a lot of retailers will keep items such as backpacks, kids’ clothes and shoes, notebooks, and pens discounted. Along with school supplies, you can find great deals on affordable laptops, tablets and software, targeted at students.

iPhones

Apple will soon release its new iPhone model, so older-generation phones are at lowered prices right now. You might want to wait until mid-September, as iPhone 6 is expected to launch on or around September 9.

Smaller HDTVs and last year’s models

Smaller TV sets are discounted right now and older models of even bigger, more popular HDTVs will be available for less. However, some manufacturers will release new TVs just in time for the holiday season, so Black Friday sales may be even better time to buy a new TV.

Cars

September is the month, when new 2015 model cars will start arriving at dealerships. And while for dealers 2014’s cars may be old, they are a pretty attractive buy for us and can be found usually at a discount of at least 10%.

Some things will be bad purchases in September. For instance, toys will see the deepest discounts in October, as retailers will need room for new, hot models for Christmas. The prices of older toys and games will also be great on Black Friday sales, so you should wait at least a month to get some real savings. Camping and hiking equipment (tents, sleeping bags, and so on) will see price cuts as early as October. The camping season is still on, so wait for the cooler temperatures to make such purchases.

If you shop online, you can find even better savings, especially at leading retailers such as Amazon. The website has constant sales and limited-time discounts on various products, so check it regularly for bargains.
