Your choice of career can affect many aspects of your life like your happiness, relationships and, of course, your income. However, a new research proves that our job can also influence our weight. According to a new study by CareerBuilder, some jobs can expose us more to weight gain than others.

The research has discovered that more than half of all workers questioned think that they have weight problems. In addition, with more than 40% of the peoplethe extra weight is a result of their current occupation. Moreover, nearly 60% of the participants in the survey have reported gaining almost 10 kg because of their job. Considerably lower is the percentage of workers who have added 10 kg to their weight as a result of their job. Those who report  weight loss due to their career are barely 16%.

The research also listed the main professions that lead to weight gain. Here are the top of them.

  • Administrative Assistant (69%)
  • Engineer (56%)
  • Teacher (51%)
  • Nurse Practitioner/Physician’s Assistant (51%)
  • IT Manager/Network Administrator (51%)
  • Attorney/Judge/Legal Professional (48%)
  • Machine Operator/Production Worker/Assembly (45%)
  • Scientist (Biological, Social, Physical) (39%)

From this ranking, it is apparent that jobs which involve less movement and sitting are the most dangerous for your waistline. That is namely what the research has found. It informs that 56% of the job-related weight gains are caused by sitting at a desk.

The second most common cause for extra weight was stress. About 35% of workers state that stress at their jobs makes them eat more. Others believe that their habit to eat out has added the extra pounds to their weight (17%). That is because takeout food can make calories hard to count or limit. In addition, a little under 10% of all workers eat products bought from vending machines.

Surprisingly, nearly 60% of workers today exercise regularly. Only 11% have shared that they do not make any efforts to stay in shape. But despite these the extra physical activities, people still tend to gain weight.

Some companies have started providing their employees with gym passes and workout facilities. Although this idea seems good, only 36% of the workers actually decide to use them to their benefit.
