Samsung announced that it will release two new phablet devices called Galaxy Mega. The company introduced a 5.8-inched and a 6.3-inched phablets which will go on sale pretty soon.
This is not really surprising. As smartphones grow bigger and tablets smaller, the mobile technology market seems to be currently going into only one direction – phablets. The South Korean manufacturer also shared that it is aware of the potential that large-screen smartphones have stating that this was namely what inspired the creation of the Galaxy Mega series. Samsung promises that the new phablets will be both portable and very powerful.
The two devices do not differ that much from each other. However, the bigger model, Galaxy Mega 6.3”, will be slightly more robust than its 5.8” version. Both phablets will run on dual-core processors, but the bigger Mega will use a 1.7GHz processor, while the smaller one – 1.4GHz. Mega 6.3 will also impress with a 3,200 mAh battery. In comparison, Mega 5.8 will use a 2,600 mAh bettery.
The devices will follow the familiar Galaxy design. Samsung does not share whether the phablets will come in different colour options. However, from the photos, which were sent out by the company, it is clear that Galaxy Mega 6.3 is black, while Galaxy Mega 5.8 is white.
In addition, the devices seem rather bulky. The bigger model weighs nearly 200g and its dimensions are 167.6 x 88 x 8.0 mm. Mega 5.8 is a bit more compact and yet it weighs 182g.
Software and Features
Both of the phablets will run on the latest Android operating system – Jelly Bean. Also, they will have an 8MP rear camera and a 1.9MP front-faced one which will support functions like Drama Shot, Rich Tone and Sound & Shot. The Galaxy Mega smartphone-tablet hybrids will include many features, among which are S Translator, ChatON and Samsung Link. They will also come with Groups Play and that will enable users to share content on up to 8 different devices.
Another of the devices’ key functions is the lately popular Air View which allows the viewing of emails, images, as well as speed dial contacts.
Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 will have a RAM of 1.5GB and external memory capacity of up to 64GB. The 5.8-inched Mega will have 8GB of internal memory. The 6.3 Galaxy Mega will come in two versions one of which will have an internal memory capacity of 8GB and the other – of 16GB.
Samsung informed that the Galaxy Mega series will be first released in Europe and Russia this May. Later, they will be launched on more global markets. However, there is still no information on the prices of the phablets.
