The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Dubai and Middle East Office will launch its second edition of the highly successful “Amazing Thailand Through the Lense” photography competion on September 1st, 2010.

The 2010 competition has been specifically designed to attract applications from residents of the Middle East, with special Thai cuisine gift vouchers from Dubai’s most distinguished Thai restaurants being awarded to the ten most popular entries each month for seven months. Read more

Emirates Announces the Launch of its Future Artists Programme

Emirates has launched a competition to find the world’s most exciting budding artists, whose winning artwork will replace the designs of renowned contemporary artists, such as Damien Hirst, on the membership cards of its frequent flyer programme, Skywards. The winners will receive a commission of US$ 5,000, enjoy global exposure and recognition for their work and will be flown to Dubai, where their winning design artwork (and other art in their portfolios) will be displayed at the Art Dubai fair in March 2011. Art Dubai is the leading contemporary art fair in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, attended by art critics, collectors and gallery owners from around the world. Read more

Jacky’s Electronics’ holds Video Gaga competition for Facebook fans

For a chance to win a Sony Ericsson XperiaTM X10 Android Smartphone and maybe even become the next singing sensation in the UAE, Jacky’s Electronics, in association with Sony Ericsson and contemporary Hindi music channel City 101.6, has launched Video Gaga – a music video competition amongst its Facebook fans in the UAE.

By filming a video of themselves singing any song of their choice in either English or Hindi, contestants – who must be 16 years old or above and a UAE resident – should then upload their entries on Jacky’s Facebook fan page - http://www.facebook.com/jackysuae. British Council award to recognise young, successful entrepreneurs in the film and television sector in UAE

The British Council has launched its search for the top International Young Screen Entrepreneur 2010 to celebrate the contribution young talented individuals working in film, television and animation make to the success of their industry.

Twelve international finalists from around the world will win the opportunity to visit the UK in October 2010 to learn from creative leaders from the world of screen, meet potential future business contacts and attend the prestigious annual London Film Festival. Lucky four-year-old and a Dubai resident of thirty years win DSMG’s first DSS 2010 raffle draw for BMW 3 Series sedans

A four year old Emirati girl and an Indian driver, who has been working in Dubai for the last thirty years, became the first two winners of Dubai Shopping Malls Group’s (DSMG) incredible campaign for Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) 2010. Both of them will receive a stunning BMW 3 Series Sedan!

DSMG announced the winners to a packed audience gathered at Dubai Outlet Mall to watch a spectacular ‘Dubai Has Got Talent’ show, just before the much awaited raffle draw. The show featured a comedian, pianist, dancer and a singer who performed to a cheering audience. Middle East Junior Chef of the Year 2010 officially begins at BurJuman

The Middle East Junior Chef of the Year, organized by the Emirates Culinary Guild and a signature event of Dubai Summer Surprises, officially opened on June 23 at BurJuman, a key sponsor of DSS, to kick start the most awaited culinary battle this year.

Yousif Mubarak, Chief Operations Officer of the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, and Eisa Adam, General Manager of BurJuman, inaugurated the event accompanied by Chef Uwe Micheel, President of the Emirates Culinary Guild.

“The Middle East Junior Chef of the Year is among the most awaited culinary events in the GCC, attested by the presence of over 600 chefs from all over the region. Submission opens for Etisalat Prize for Arabic Children’s Literature

The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) has invited entries from Arab and international publishing houses to participate in the second edition of the AED1 million Etisalat Prize for Arabic Children’s Literature.

The submission of entries by publishers is open until 31 August, after which entries will be evaluated by the jury and the winning title selected. The winner of the AED1 million will be announced during the opening of the Sharjah International Book Fair. Fifty percent of the prize money will go to the winning publisher, while the remaining 50 percent will be divided amongst the other parties as per the decision of the jury.

Highlighting the importance of the prize in motivating the Arabic children’s book industry, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of UAEBBY, said that the award will contribute to bringing about a healthy competition between publishers, authors and illustrators to produce eye-catching, well-produced and interesting books for children, which will in turn help stimulate a child’s creativity and imagination. Khalifa University organizes Mobile Application Competition 2010

Application Store 180x150 Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) hosted its fifth annual Mobile Application Contest (MAC) at the Park Rotana Hotel, Abu Dhabi. Students from nine universities across the UAE and the region participated in this year’s competition and displayed 15 innovative projects in the Mobile phone applications field.

This year’s competition showcased a heightened level of technical development among participants. Four application projects won first place, presented by students from Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University and Zayed University, and which were critiqued under the supervision of a committee of judges. The committee was chaired by telecommunications Engineer, Mr. Saif Bin Ghelaita from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA); Mr. Yousuf Al Askar and Mr. Hamad Al Hosany from Etisalat; Dr. Wathiq Mansour from American University of Dubai (AUD) and; Mr. Mohamed Al Ramsi from the TRA. Khalifa University organizes Engineering Students Ethics Competition 2010

Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and KUSTAR IEEE Student Branch organized the second Engineering Students Ethics Competition 2010 (ESEC2010) at KUSTAR’s Abu Dhabi campus. The event was sponsored by Global Aerospace Logistics LLC (GAL).

The aim of the competition was to provide engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation of ethical issues and responsibilities. The prime objectives of this event were; to foster familiarity with the IEEE Code of Ethics and ethical concepts, to promote a model for discussing and analyzing ethical questions, to provide experience in applying ethical concepts to typical professional situations, and to enhance engineering students’ understanding of their ethical duties as professionals.
