Make-a-Wish Foundation UAE Helps Diabetic Children’s Dreams Come True

Marking World Diabetes Day , Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), part of Mubadala’s integrated network of healthcare providers, worked with Make-a-Wish Foundation UAE to grant the wishes of children with type-1 diabetes during a ceremony held at the centre.

The non-profit organisation arranges memorable experiences for children with critical illnesses.

“Through this ceremony, we are sharing with everyone at ICLDC the power of a wish, because we believe wishes have the ability to transform children’s lives, especially the lives of those who suffer from chronic diseases that require lifelong management,” said Hani Al Zubaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Make-a-Wish Foundation UAE. “For children with diabetes, having their one true wish granted makes them feel in control again and empowered to beat their illness, and it is a very humbling experience to be part of this process and to impact those children’s lives.”

Ten youngsters with type-1 diabetes were granted their wish during a short ceremony, followed by a diabetic-friendly lunch complete with cake. Afternoon activities included face-painting, arts and crafts and a balloon art demonstration.

Dr. Amani Taha Osman, consultant paediatric diabetologist at ICLDC, said: “Children with Type 1 diabetes face a variety of challenges, from dealing with daily injections and dietary restrictions to feeling and being treated differently than their peers. We felt it was important to provide an opportunity for our younger patients to interact with people of their own age who face similar challenges to themselves.”

The children attended the event with their parents. All are under the care of Dr. Osman, who is based at the centre. The event was also attended by a delegation from Make-A-Wish Foundation UAE and members of ICLDC’s clinical staff.

Dr. Osman added: “Yesterday’s gathering was the first event we have held in conjunction with Make-a-Wish Foundation UAE. We wish to thank everyone involved for making it such a success.”
