Viber Lands on Windows 8 Devices

The popular communication platform Viber is now available on more devices. The VoIP and messaging app was recently launched on Windows 8 devices.

Even though Viber initially started out as a mobile app, it is slowing moving to a wider field. In mid-2013, soon after it surpassed 200 million users. The desktop Viber app was at first compatible with Mac and PC products. In addition, the calls feature was only available from desktop to desktop computers. In other words, there were some limitations.

However, the Windows 8 version of Viber sounds very promising. It was developed specifically for Microsoft’s latest desktop OS and it comes with some exclusive features. They take full advantage of the live tiles and lock-screen notification capabilities of Windows 8 devices.
Viber’s Windows 8 app enables users to pin conversations to the computer’s Start Screen. In that way, you can continue your conversations over the platforms while you do other tasks. Another exclusive W8 Viber function is the Search charm support. In other words, you can run a quick search on your Viber contact in Windows 8’s very own Search box. In addition to that, the Windows 8 edition of the platform supports different languages, as well as the stickers options which was introduced not long ago.
It is more than obvious that Viber has turned into a very ambitious project. The company behind the service seems to have taken on a brand new strategy. As it was mentioned above, it is no longer limited only to smartphones and it has started introducing additional features like stickers. As a result, the platform may soon challenge popular services like Skype or Facebook Messenger.

Last summer, Viber landed on Windows Phone 8 devices. Again, it used all the capabilities of the OS to offer a better user experience. For example, it had a different user interface and performance compatible with the parameters of Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

According to CEO Talmon Marco, the Windows 8 OS offers many new opportunities for the platform. In addition, Marco shared that part of the service’s new goal is to become available across various platforms, both mobile and desktop.

Also, only a few days ago, Viber launched a new function named Viber Out. It is available for all Viber users. With it, they can connect to people who to do not have the Viber application. It enables users to call landline and mobile numbers. This feature reminds a lot of Microsoft’s Skype Out and, similar to it, it is paid. Nevertheless, Viber prices are lower compared to those offered by Skype.

If you want to try out Viber for Windows 8, you can now download it from the Windows app store for free.
