Gold futures notched a record high Tuesday as investors worried about a potential government shutdown and the ongoing fighting in Libya, and doubted that Portugal and others in the periphery of the euro zone will make good on their debts.

Gold for June delivery added $19.50, or 1.4%, to $1,452.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
