The Ministry of Labour organised today an introductory seminar for the employing firms to enlighten them on the government regulations enforcing midday break for workers during summer, reports the official news agency WAM.

The seminar addressed by Director General of the Labour Ministry Humaid Bin Deemas was attended by representatives of over a thousand firms in the capital.

Speaking at the seminar held at the Police Officer’s Club in Abu Dhabi, Deemas said that the decision banning work in open spaces under sun during the midday hours comes into effect from 15th June and will last for three months. This decision is enacted to protect over 4.1million workers in the private sector. In the construction sector alone there are over two million workers. In addition to this several hundred thousand people work in the transportation, cleaning and other services and they need to be protected from working under direct sun, added Deemas.

The decision to exempt certain categories is taken in the public interest and the ministry will not accept any excuses from companies from implementing the decision even if they have to meet the deadline for projects completion, reminded Deemas.

The UAE pioneered this initiative of banning midday work during summer and other countries in the region followed this model, Deemas pointed out.
