According to company Official Charts, the song crossed the milestone after selling 68,000 copies in 2013, 19 years after it first went for sale.
When Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” was first released in 1994, it took the second place beaten to East 17’s “Stay Another Day”. Every year, the track entered the top 20 list for Christmas songs and in 2007, it even reached No.4, while today with sales of over 1 million copies, it stands at No.12. It has generated an estimated $50 million in royalties worldwide and according to Official Charts, it is one of 142 singles in the history of the company that sold over a million copies. Other holiday tracks to enter the ranking are Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”, Slade’s “Merry Christmas Everybody”, and others.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” was the just beginning of Mariah Carey’s path to becoming No.1 Christmas diva in the world. She kicked off her “12 Days of Christmas” series on NBC this month in addition to the numerous other holiday special appearances, including a show with Michael Buble. Carey also performed at the switching on the lights on the famous Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center. The Queen of Christmas boasts with various records in the U.S. – “All I Want for Christmas is You” remains at its first Billboard position in the holiday charts, and her holiday album “Merry Christmas” has sold more than 14 million copies around the world. She will also be a headliner in NBC’s 2013 New Year’s Eve broadcast.
