Dubai Design and Fashion Council Established

With a Decree No.23 of 2013, HH Shaikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, has announced the establishment of the brand new institution in the emirate, Dubai Design and Fashion Council. The decree comes as a following step of Dubai’s determination to develop and boost the growth of the design and fashion sector.

The decree shows the emirate’s commitment to develop the design and fashion industry in Dubai and establish it as a more important part of the economy. Among the first tasks of the Design and Fashion Council will be ensuring the creating of a working plan for the growth of fashion industry in the emirate. It will also support existing regional businesses and encourage new local talents by launching various initiatives with both national and international participation. Stimulating the growth of SMEs in the sector, forming an international interest for national and regional products, contributing to Dubai’s tourism, as well as raising the GDP, are the council’s priorities, according to the decree. Another objective will be initiating different fashion and design events.

The establishment of the new council follows the launching of the Dubai Design District this June by Shaikh Mohammad. It will be created under the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority (DTMFZA) and will include members of from the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Dubai Design District. Other members of the council will be experts from Emaar, as well as other specialists from a variety of related sectors and each one of them will be selected for their experience, expertise and good leadership skills.

Dubai Design District was launched in June to support and further nurture the development of fashion and luxury industries in the emirate. It will be operated by a developer TECOM Investments which is a member of Dubai Holding and a well-established creator of business parks in Dubai.
