Passenger numbers at Dubai International Airport reached over 4.2 million in September, an increase of 6.2% when compared with the same month a year earlier.

Additionally, traffic at the gateway so far this year has hit more than 37.5 million passengers, an increase of 7.8% over the corresponding period in 2010.

Meanwhile, according to operator Dubai Airports, aircraft movements at the gateway totalled 26,860 in September up 6.8% from 25,145 recorded during the same month in 2010.

Elsewhere however, the airport handled 177,128 tonnes of freight in September, a decrease of 5.5% compared with the 187,390 tonnes recorded during the same period in 2010, reflecting continued “economic uncertainty and flagging consumer confidence”.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “We have had a good year so far in terms of passenger traffic and with the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj just a few days away, we expect to see already robust passenger numbers surge over the coming weeks.”
