Emirates Green Building Council opens new ‘green’ office

Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), an organisation aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices in the UAE, today, opened its new office in Al Joud Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai.

Dr Elissar Sarrouh, United Nations Resident Co-ordinator and United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative opened the new office. At the ceremony, EmiratesGBC honoured five organisations that have made commendable contribution to EmiratesGBC. The council also announced the introduction of two new awards – a Student Research Award of AED 5,000 and the EmiratesGBC Award for Best Green Buildings in the UAE.

The event, which coincides with the Green Buildings Week celebration to be held from September 21, was attended by high-level government officials, diplomats, representatives of leading corporate organisations and business councils, developers, financial professionals and stakeholders representing the whole supply chain. MAF Dalkia Middle East LLC, BASF – The Chemical Company, Leviton and Trane were the Main Sponsors of the opening ceremony.

Adnan Sharafi, Chairman, EmiratesGBC, said: “The opening of the new office of Emirates Green Building Council is a landmark move as we further underline our commitment to upholding green building practices. The innovative office design and the sustainable built environment considerations that have gone into the new office will serve as an inspiration for all stakeholders involved in driving the UAE’s sustainable growth.”

He added: “EmiratesGBC has introduced two new awards to drive two key objectives. The Student Research Award aims to inspire the student community to undertake research on sustainable built environments while the EmiratesGBC Awards for green buildings in the UAE are envisaged to inspire developers to adhere to sustainable development considerations. We thank all our partners for their continued support which has helped us in achieving our organisational goals.”

Dr Elissar Sarrouh said: “It is extremely encouraging to observe the significant strides that Emirates Green Building Council has made in a short span of time in promoting sustainable built environments in the UAE. The Council’s emphasis on providing support across the entire supply chain and its commitment to boost awareness through knowledge sessions will immensely benefit the UAE in the coming years. We are confident that EmiratesGBC can bring about tangible positive change, and the new office with sustainable design elements will inspire all its partners.”

The new office of EmiratesGBC, serves as a model for sustainable building interiors, and demonstrates leading and widely used sustainable technologies and tools for buildings. The office interiors will also go for a LEED Commercial Interiors Rating.

In addition to networking events for members and non-members held monthly, EmiratesGBC has been hosting and participating in multinational events, conferences and forums since its inception in 2006. The Council has developed a suite of activities including technical workshops, focus days and seminars and workshops on aspects related to the entire supply chain and green building concept that meet the needs of its members, of the UAE community, and the wider Middle East.
