2nd June, 2011 was not like any other regular school day for the students of the Delhi Private School, Sharjah. They had much to look forward to as for the first time they were going to be in school and not use paper at all! There was going to be English, Math, Science but no books to read or write.

A ‘Paperless Day’ was organized to celebrate the World Environment Day. Every individual at school right from Sr. Headmistress Mousumi Ma’am to the Supervisors, teachers, Administrative staff and even the help staff consciously decided to actively participate, contribute and promote awareness about conservation of paper.

It was indeed challenging to observe Paperless Day without deviating from the regular teaching at school. The ground rules were laid and a spate of subject related activities were meticulously planned to make the day a fruitful one.

Sr. Headmistress Mousumi Ma’am administered the oath to protect and save the Earth. Our Principal Mrs. Vandana Marwaha planted regional fruit trees saplings. Various activities were planned in each subject in the classrooms like ‘Nutrients Party’ wherein the children shared healthy food but no disposable items were used. Story building, word games, quiz and story enactments were organized. Audio visual presentation on ‘Journey of Paper’ was shown to the students. Every child actively participated in a recycling program by bringing newspaper and magazines from home and depositing them in bins provided by Bee’ah. Students of Grade 3, 4 & 5 made paper bags using old newspapers which were donated to the school store. Class Performa and substitutions were written on white boards. No papers here too! The admin staff used ribbon and slates to pass on the messages. Display board decorated without using paper!

The event was special in other ways too. Radio 1024 FM Suno’s RJ Tarun covered the activities live on air. He had an informal chat with the Sr. Head Mistress and the students. Mousumi Ma’am expressed her views on the event and spoke about the school’s active participation in LaBL and of the project Ambassadors of Community and Environment, ACE.

The day was indeed a great success. At Delhi Private School, we definitely made an effort to take a green step forward towards a greener and cleaner Earth.
