Under the aegis of Assam Society UAE, the Assamese community celebrated Rongali Bihu with traditional gaiety in a cultural extravaganza in Dubai. Rongali Bihu celebrates the onset of the Assamese New Year and is the biggest socio-cultural spring festival of the people of Assam in India’s north-east.

Consul General of India in Dubai, Mr. Sanjay Verma graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his message, the Indian Consul General said:

“On the auspicious occasion of Rongali Bihu, I extend my greetings and best wishes to the entire Assamese community in the UAE. May the Assamese New Year bring peace, happiness and prosperity to the entire community.

I would also like to express my admiration for the rich and inclusive Assamese culture which brings together people of different faiths and beliefs.”

During the Rongali Bihu festivities, Consul General Verma launched the new website of Assam Society UAE, www.assamuae.org and released the fifth edition of ‘Probaxi Bihuwan’, the Rongali Bihu 2010 souvenir, which serves as a socio-cultural medium for the UAE’s vibrant Assamese community.

This year’s Rongali Bihu celebrations were held at Dubai’s Metropolitan Palace Hotel in Deira, where members of the UAE’s Assamese community performed the traditional bihu dance and hussorie amidst the unique sounds of exotic musical instruments like dhol, pepa and gogona. During the cultural programme, local artistes were joined by guest performers from Assam who enthralled the audience with the famous sattriya dance and a plethora of popular Assamese songs.

Assam Society UAE is a community based voluntary organisation which serves as a socio-cultural forum for the Assamese community living in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Northern Emirates. For more information, please visit www.assamuae.org.
