‘Chilean Week’ will set the stage for closer bilateral engagement and opening of Chilean embassy

Chile, ranked among the most dynamic and sustainable economies in South America, will unveil a week-long programme as a prelude to accelerating bilateral trade, investment and cultural exchanges with the UAE.

The ‘Chilean Week’, a showcase of trade seminars, business meetings, gastronomic delights and cultural activities being held from 17th to 24th October in Dubai, will highlight the renewed focus of the Latin American economic powerhouse on the UAE. Organised by the Chilean Trade commission (ProChile), the Week will also see Chile opening its embassy in Abu Dhabi, the first of its diplomatic missions in the GCC.

Trade representatives and sector leaders from Chile will participate in the ‘Chilean Week’, drawing attention to the thriving export market and the competitive business environment in the country. Exports constituted more than US$70 billion to Chile’s total trade of US$126.7 billion in 2008.

The country also ranked first in Latin America in the most recent Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

“Chile and the United Arab Emirates share a common vision and approach to bilateral engagement. The prevailing global economic climate reinforces the need for closer co-operation between the two countries and the ‘Chilean Week’ will help identify opportunities for such strategic partnerships,” commented Mr. Carlos Salas, Trade Commissioner of Chile in the UAE.

Trade between Chile and the UAE exceeded US$113 million in 2008, with Chilean exports accounting for US$107.7 million. Most notably, export of fruits, fish and beverages from Chile to the UAE grew significantly in 2008.

“Food exports are the second highest foreign income earner for Chile. We aim to be among the top 10 food exporters in the world and our growth in the UAE market is hence mission critical”, stated the Trade Commissioner.

“Chile is also capable of providing added value and efficiency to the construction, engineering and architectural sectors in the UAE. Contractors from Chile have successfully competed with the top names in the world on various energy, transportation, communication, sewerage and real estate projects, earning laurels for their efficiency, low costs, sophisticated equipment and technology,” added Mr. Salas.

Wood, cellulose, and race horses are some other examples of exports from Chile to the UAE. Over the years, Chile has also positioned itself as a leading exporter of services in the transport, tourism, retail, engineering, information technology, financial, health and education sectors.
