The number of working visas being issued in Dubai remains a “net positive”, according to the chief economist in the Dubai government.

Real growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in Dubai is set to fall to “slightly less” than 2.5 percent this year compared with about 8 percent in 2008, Raed Safadi told an International Monetary Fund briefing in Dubai. But Safadi, who called the GDP growth forecast ” conservative”, said Dubai still managed to issue 1,000 new residency visas a day in January on a net basis.

Population growth in Dubai has slowed, according to figures released yesterday by the Naturalisation and Residency Department which show the net growth halved this January compared with the same month last year.

The figures show that 54,684 residency visas were cancelled last month. At the same time, 88,423 new visas were issued, representing a net gain of more than 1,000 visas per day on average. By comparison, in January last year, 93,957 visas were issued, which when measured against the 29,418 cancellations in the period represented an average net gain of more than 2,000 per day.

The release of the figures follows speculation within the UAE and abroad that job losses amid the global economic slowdown have led to large numbers of expatriates leaving the country.
