Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) brought fun into the lives of 60 children with special needs by taking them on a day out to KidZania®, a full-fledged mini city scaled down to the size of children, at The Dubai Mall. The trip was organised to develop the mental and social skills of the children through fun and enjoyable activities.

Al Amal Camp, which comes under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah, and to which ENOC is a sponsor, provides around 100 children with special needs with the opportunity to learn, cultivate their sense of identity and enhance their participation in society.

“Xplore UAE” aims at raising donations for charity initiatives

In keeping with its commitment to give back to the community, ENOC Lubricants, a subsidiary of Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), has teamed up with the Arabian Automobiles Co., the flagship company of AW Rostamani Group and exclusive distributor of Nissan, Infiniti and Renault in UAE, to organise the second edition of “Xplore UAE” off-road driving event.

With participation of more than 500 4×4 owners, all proceeds collected from the event, held recently, were donated to the Rashid Pediatric Centre, a humanitarian organisation which provides quality education and therapy services to children with special needs. The two companies raised AED 85,000 in donations, and a cheque was given to Rashid Pediatric Centre by Zaid Alqufaidi, Chief Executive Officer, Retail Business Stream, ENOC; and Michel Ayat, Chief Executive Officer of AW Rostamani Group.

Highlights commitment of company to partner in socially relevant causes

Image1 General Electric Company (GE) employees in Bahrain have stepped out to support the community through their participation in a blood donation campaign. The participation by GE Volunteers in the Kingdom highlight the commitment of the company to play an active role in socially relevant initiatives that further build strong community linkages.

Over 25 employees of GE in Bahrain took part in the blood donation campaign at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, the biggest medical facility in Bahrain serving 90 per cent of the nation’s population.

Some 16 participants and 16 supporters from GE also signed up for the Bahrain Marathon Relay marking the company’s fourth consecutive year of participation. The participants took part in regular training session to enhance fitness and stamina for the event, organised by Bahrain Round Table to raise funds for various local charities.  GE employees ran a total of 47 km, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Barclays clean-up driveBarclays set the tone for a ten day community engagement campaign by mentoring Emirati school students.  This is one in a series of initiatives implemented in support of CSV Make a Difference Day held from 24 October to 7 November 2009.

Community Services Volunteers (CSV), a charity set up 50 years ago to promote volunteering action, encourages people to donate their time and contribute to the community spirit.  Barclays has been associated with the CSV Make a Difference Day campaign since 2000 as part of its Charity Begins at Work programme and it is one of the largest corporate contributors of volunteers to the campaign.  CSV Make a Difference Day unites all Barclays colleagues across the world to make a difference in their communities through volunteering.

Employees decide themselves how they wish to ‘make a difference’.  This could be through a charity colleagues are already involved with, or there is the opportunity to be involved with the larger group activities.

Jumeirah College collect books for students in Afghanistan

JC students Two students from Jumeirah College led an appeal that resulted in 4,000 books being collected for a girl’s school and a literacy centre in Afghanistan. Of the total books collected, the student council at the Rashid School for Boys donated 1,200 books in the “A book a day will give them a say!” campaign.

The appeal initially targeted collecting 1,000 books for the school in Afghanistan but received more books than first anticipated.

Christina Patronis, one of the students that initiated the appeal from Jumeirah College said, “The campaign aims to provide young people like ourselves in Afghanistan the chance to become active members of the community. The children there, especially young girls, are in desperate need for the world’s support in gaining access to English books, as they continue to suffer from ravages of war. We thank the students from the Rashid School for Boys for their support in this humanitarian appeal.”

International Humanitarian City (IHC), a global humanitarian and aid hub set up by the Government of Dubai, has announced that it is discussing several key initiatives with the representative of the Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC), within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. IHC’s CEO, Makiya Al Hajiri (pictured) met with Barbara Daetwyler (pictured), the head of the SDC delegation to discuss future partnerships and collaborations between the two organisations.

Carrefour UAE donates food supplies worth AED625,000 to people in need

FOOD SUPPLIES Leading UAE retailer Carrefour has made a significant contribution to the humanitarian work of the Red Crescent Society with the active support of its suppliers.

A truck-load of food items worth a staggering AED625,000 has been delivered to the Red Crescent’s Abu Dhabi office and will go to needy communities across the UAE as soon as possible.

Carrefour carried out the collection drive in the UAE during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Foodstuffs were given free or at heavily discounted prices with the support of IFFCO and Agility.

Henri Changeux, Head of Carrefour for the GCC, said: “With so many deserving causes abroad occupying our attention, it is sometimes easy to forget that there are people in need here in the UAE, too. We feel it is very important to make this contribution to vulnerable communities at home, and are grateful that our suppliers joined in the effort.”

Carrefour’s donation initiative is now in its third year and this year’s donation has surpassed the amount raised in 2008.
