Today marks World Food Day, which is celebrated each year in honor of the founding of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization on 16 October 1945. This year’s theme “Feeding the world, caring for the Earth” focuses on family farming, but instead of talking about global hunger, a problem that cannot be solved that easily, we’ve decided to help you choose the healthiest foods for your daily diet.

The World Food Day isn’t only about raising awareness of food security. It’s also about highlighting the problem of the increasingly unhealthy way we eat. We grow our food in most unnatural ways – with artificial light, fertilizers and pesticides, we prepare it wrongly by freezing, pasteurizing and deep frying it, and we end up consuming simple calories, salt and artificial ingredients and no actual nutrients.

To change that, you can maximize the amount of nutrients you eat by picking up the healthiest and most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.

Saltwater fish

Saltwater fish, including fatty fish such as salmon, are the one of the healthiest sources of protein and essential Omega3- fatty acids consumed worldwide. Saltwater fish don’t eat food raised with chemical fertilizers.

Kelp and other types of seaweed

Kelp is an edible form of brown algae, rich in potassium, iodine, protein, magnesium, omega-3 and others. Generally edible seaweed is more nutritious than vegetables from the land.

Organic mushrooms

Mushrooms are rich in iron and protein and are vital in boosting the immune system. Traditional medicine has used them for centuries and modern medicine is discovering their great potential right now.

Kale

It’s loaded with vitamins (C, A, K1, B6), potassium, magnesium, calcium copper and manganese. It’s also rich in fiber, antioxidants, and various bioactive and cancer-fighting compounds.

Egg yolks

They may be hated for their cholesterol content, but in fact, dietary cholesterol doesn’t raise the “bad” cholesterol in your blood. Instead, egg yolks are loaded with an amazing amount of nutrients – vitamins, minerals, high quality protein, healthy fats and various compounds including Lutein and Zeaxanthine, choline and many, many others. That’s why they are often called “nature’s multivitamin”.

Other super nutritious and healthy foods you should include in your diet are nuts, broccoli, wild berries, lemons, honey, maple syrup, wild rice, liver, shellfish, potatoes, coconut and dark chocolate. Forget about popular supplements and exotic “superfoods”, which are nearly impossible to find – opt for organic, local produce and fresh foods instead of frozen ones. This is the best way to back local farmers and contribute to the food safety on the planet.
