Prices of food stuff items show upward trend during third week of Ramadan

Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued today an analysis of its Foodstuffs Price Index for the third week of the month of Ramadan.
The report is part of a series of reports through which the center closely monitors daily the changes in the prices of food items in the local market of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the month of Ramadan, and release an up-to-date follow-up of price movements with aim of promoting awareness among consumers and in line with the SCAD’s initiatives for providing reliable and timely statistics to meet the needs of users and contribute towards more awareness among consumers in the society.

The report’s findings revealed a rise of 0.49% in the prices of foodstuffs during the third week of Ramadan, compared to the previous (second) week of the month. This was due to an increase in the prices of certain items in various sub-groups by the following percentage point: meat by 40%, fish and seafood by 2.75%, fruit by 1.98%, pulses by 1.04%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 0.06%, and coffee, tea and cocoa by 0.33%.
Meanwhile items in the following subgroups inched down as follows: bread and cereals by 0.14%, milk, cheese and eggs by 0.53% and oils and fats by 2.15%. On the other hand the prices of mineral water, soft drinks and various types of fruit juices remained generally stable.

The report revealed a rise of 0.28% in the prices of foodstuffs during the third week of Ramadan, compared to the week preceding Ramadan. This resulted from a surge in the prices of various items in a number of subgroups as follows: bread and cereals prices went up 1.20%, meat, 0.43%, fruits and pulses 0.64% each, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery 1.35% and finally, mineral water, soft drinks and fruit juices 0.35%.
In the meantime the prices of goods in following sub-groups dropped at the following percentages: fish and seafood by 2.70%, milk, cheese and eggs by 0.21%, oils and fats by 0.55% and coffee, tea and cocoa by 0.10%.
Analysis of the report findings points further to a rise of 0.07% in food prices during the third week of Ramadan as compared with the price levels of last July. This was caused by higher prices of some items within various sub-groups as follows: meat prices nudged up 0.34%, fish and seafood increased by 2.65%, pulses by 16.19%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 15.64%, and finally mineral water and soft drinks by 1.05%, while the prices of goods within the following subgroups retreated as follows: bread and cereals by 7.79%, milk, cheese and eggs by 1.81%, fruits by 11.89%, oils and fats by 0.98%, and coffee, tea and cocoa by 0.64%.
