Dubai is accelerating its long-term transport strategy with a series of ambitious rail projects, including a proposed Airport Express Line linking its two major aviation hubs and the newly approved Dubai Metro Gold Line. Together, these initiatives signal a major step toward creating a faster, more integrated urban mobility network aligned with the emirate’s growth plans.
Airport Express Line Gains Momentum
Recent reporting from regional sources indicates that Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun the process of appointing consultants to design a dedicated metro link between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). The proposed line, estimated at around 55 kilometres, would run from Al Garhoud near DXB to Dubai South, passing through key residential and commercial districts.
The route is expected to include around five main stations and follow major corridors such as Al Khail Road, with connectivity through areas like Al Jaddaf and Jumeirah Village Circle. Two additional spur lines are also being studied, extending toward Business Bay and the Emirates Golf Club area.
What sets this project apart is its focus on improving the passenger journey. Plans suggest stations along the Airport Express Line could offer airport-style services such as remote check-in, baggage drop, and even elements of security processing. This would allow travelers to complete key procedures before arriving at the airport itself, helping reduce congestion at terminals while saving time.
The line is closely tied to Dubai’s aviation strategy. While Dubai International Airport remains one of the busiest global hubs, Al Maktoum International Airport is being developed to handle significantly higher passenger volumes in the future. A fast, direct metro connection between the two will be essential as aviation activity gradually expands southward.
Government Approves Dubai Metro Gold Line
In parallel with these plans, the government has approved the Dubai Metro Gold Line, a new corridor designed to strengthen connectivity across the city. Announced on 22 April 2026, the project is expected to play a key role in easing pressure on existing metro routes, particularly the heavily used Red Line.
The Gold Line will run through densely populated districts and connect major residential and commercial areas, improving access to key destinations across Dubai. According to official information released by the Dubai Media Office, the line is part of a broader effort to expand public transport capacity and make daily commuting more efficient.
The project also supports long-term urban planning goals by improving accessibility and encouraging greater use of public transport, reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Complementary Projects, Unified Vision
The Airport Express Line and the Gold Line form part of a wider expansion of Dubai’s rail network, which already includes the Red and Green Lines, as well as the Route 2020 extension and other proposed corridors such as the Blue Line.
These projects are aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which prioritizes sustainable mobility, reduced congestion, and better connectivity between key areas of the city. By expanding metro coverage and linking it more closely with major infrastructure like airports, Dubai aims to create a more efficient and integrated transport system.
The Airport Express Line represents a forward-looking concept that blends urban transit with aviation services, while the Gold Line focuses on addressing current demand within the city’s core.
Looking Ahead
The Airport Express Line remains in the design and feasibility stage, with consultants expected to submit proposals in the coming months. Meanwhile, the approval of the Gold Line signals clear progress in expanding Dubai’s metro infrastructure.
Together, these developments highlight a coordinated effort to future-proof the city’s transport network. As Dubai continues to grow in population, tourism, and economic activity, efficient and well-connected public transport will become even more critical.
By investing in large-scale, integrated rail projects, Dubai is reinforcing its position as a global leader in urban mobility—building a system designed to support both current demand and future expansion.
