Drinking coffee seems like a necessary part of some jobs and police officers are no longer the biggest fans of the popular beverage. A new study which ranks the top 10 coffee addicts says that journalists consume more coffee than people in any other profession.
If you feel you can’t function without coffee, especially in the mornings, you’re not alone. Out of the 10,000 people surveyed in a new study, 85% said that they consume at least three cups of coffee a day. And nearly 70% of the people admit they need their daily mug of coffee to do their jobs well, not simply because of a morning ritual or love for caffeine. The researchers from UK firm Pressat explain that the biggest coffee addicts are those with stressful careers such as journalists, police officers, and teachers. What about surgeons, fire fighters, or the military? Aren’t their jobs stressful enough? According to the study findings, the top 10 professions prone to coffee addiction are as follows:
- Journalists
- Police officers
- Teachers
- Plumbers/trade workers
- Nurses/medical staff
- Company executives
- Telesales professionals
- IT technical support
- Retail staff
- Drivers
Moreover, men were found to drink more coffee than women, although the difference is just a little over 5%. The study also shows that 62% of the respondents didn’t know about the harmful effects that coffee can have on their health. These include increased blood pressure, arrhythmia, indigestion, insomnia, headaches, and in the longer term, higher doses of caffeine are associated with increased risk of high cholesterol, heart disease and osteoporosis. A different study from the University of South Carolina shows that the healthy daily amount of caffeine is no more than 200 mg a day. This is approximately four cups or two mugs of coffee.
Scientists say that limiting the consumption to 2-3 cups a day is in fact healthy and the best way to take advantage of its stimulating qualities is to drink small doses throughout the day. However, most people would finish 2 cups before 9.00 am. as they feel they need coffee to wake up and focus on the job at hand. Another recent study claimed that the so-called “coffee naps” may be best – you drink a cup of coffee and immediately fall asleep for about 20 minutes. But good luck with this.
