What to Wear on a First Date?

Getting dressed for a first date sounds like something we’ve all done and should have mastered, right? But then why are we stressing out so much? The reason is that appearance, especially when you are with someone you’ve just met, means a lot more than we want to admit. You relationship will most probably evolve from the first impressions, so you should give it a more thought when choosing what to wear on a first date.

Choosing the proper clothes and overall looks for a first date isn’t an exact science, but there are certain rules you should stick to, if you want to impress that awesome guy or girl you have just met or you are about to meet for first time in real life but not on an online dating platform. And it’s not about fashion – it’s about showing off the best of yourself without posing as someone who you are clearly not. It’s also about being calm and confident, two things that are extremely attractive in both sexes. And it’s also about using clothes as personal branding – by the way you look you will attract different types of persons. Most of the “rules” of dressing for first date are pretty much obvious and common. But a surprisingly huge number of people don’t even bother to consider them when deciding on what to wear on a first date.

Clothing is one of the ways to instantly look more presentable and attractive to other people. Your date will probably not even notice designer labels and fashion trends are even less relevant. However, he or she will notice whether your clothes are clean and in good condition, and whether they fit you right. If high heels are just not your everyday thing, forget about them – it will be obvious that you can’t wait to get home and take them off. Don’t try a new haircut right before the date. You should give it several days to start feeling more like you.

Add your own personal style. Most women have their own sense of fashion, so they can easily adapt almost any piece of clothing to their style. But that’s not always the case with men, who often think ladies won’t appreciate their Superman T-shirt. Well, if she agreed to go out with you in the first place, she should be aware of your style. However, superheroes, cartoon characters and fun clothes may not be the best option for a first date. One of women’s most common mistakes, on the other hand, is wearing high heels, thinking they are more attractive and sexy in men’s eyes. Yes, they are, but if you can’t really walk with them, you’ll look absurd.

Always know where you are going on a first date and dress accordingly. This is probably one of the most important rules that almost everyone seems to forget. Jeans are out of the question if you are having a dinner at an expensive restaurant. But don’t show up in a floor-length formal gown if there’s even the slightest chance to visit a nightclub after the dinner. A little black dress, however, will be perfect for both places. For a lower-key date such as picnic (although, who goes on a picnic on their first date?), choose a nicer version of what you normally wear. Items such as flip-flops, jeans, shorts, khakis, sweatpants, and fitness shoes are BANNED!

Flatter your best features instead of showing off too much. One huge mistake women do is going on a first date in too revealing outfits. This may be sexy, but showing just little bits (your best bits) of yourself is much more intriguing and, it may sound  little rough, sparks men’s desire to explore and conquer. For example, if you have great legs, show them! And guys, if you have nice upper body, a top that flatters it will be perfect. Also, find what styles, trends, and colours look best on you. If you hesitate, wear red – men think red is the sexiest colour on women. That’s a scientific fact.

Another great option for women is the nice-looking summer dress in a soft fabric and natural colours. Why? Because men are attracted to women who actually look as nice persons. Of course, this type of dress is also feminine and flirtatious, yet casual enough to make you look friendly and approachable.

And here are some useful tips, if you are still not certain what to wear on a first date:

Highlight your body shape by choosing the right clothes. For example, if you are pear-shaped, wear dark-coloured pants or skirts, while the top should be lighter. Vertical stripes make you look thinner, while horizontal lines create the feel of a wider body. Highlight your best body parts with bright colours.

Try to be more neutral, especially if it’s a blind date. One classic that always works great is the black and white combo. For instance, a black skirt or leather leggings can pair nicely with a white silk blouse. Add red lipstick for more fun. Sometimes it’s better to look all right than to look amazing.

These are some simple rules when choosing an outfit for your first date, although there are no specific “dos” and “don’t”, as it’s always very individual. Some women will love a guy, wearing a T-shirt with a cheesy slogan on it, while some men will fall for bright make-up or all-black, leather Goth styles. The most important thing is that whatever you are wearing, to be yourself, cook comfortable, confident and to wear with purpose.
