Dubai Film Festival & More This Weekend in Dubai


The huge festivities celebrating UAE National Day may be over, but Dubai is still hosting many shows, sports competitions and lots of other events. This weekend, the residents and guests of the city will see ballets, tournaments, art exhibitions, fashion shows and endless fun for the kids.

DIFF 2008 Honouree Rashid Bouchareb with 2008 Muhr Award WinnersOne of the biggest and most glamorous events this month is the 11th edition of Dubai International Film Festival, which starts on Wednesday, December 10 and runs for an entire week at Madinat Jumeirah. The festival brings together international and Arab cinema, including some of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Opening with James Marsh’s biopic of famous English theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking, “The Theory of Everything” (starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones), the fest will also feature the musical “Into the Woods” (with Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Chris Pine), Russell Crowe’s “The Water Diviner”, “Escobar: Paradise Lost”, and “The Imitation Game: with Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. There will be a lot of surprises, including Hollywood star appearances on the red carpet and many more.

Christmas DecorationFrom Thursday till Saturday, you can find everything Christmas-related at Dubai Christmas Festival, which will feature a Christmas market, Santa’s Grotto, stage performances, carols, cooking workshops, snow fall, and tons of other fun activities for the whole family. It is held at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre and tickets start from AED 35 and AED 25 for the kids.

And just in time for the holidays, you can see the Moscow City Ballet and their astonishing presentation of the classic “The Nutcracker” at DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates. Bringing the festive mood, the ballet will have two daily shows from Thursday through Saturday. Tickets are AED 200 – AED 350.

On Friday, Emirates International School will host “Mirage”, a dance performance by the Ripple Effect dance troupe, which combines dance and stunning visual effects to represent a set of dynamic moods of the element water. Doors open at 7.00 pm and tickets are AED 100.

This weekend, Dubai fashionistas will once again enjoy a style-dedicated expo. The Numaish Winter Show 2014 comes this Saturday with its seventh edition at Godolphin, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, bringing fashion and traditions from the East. From exotic clothing to designer collections and bridal fashion, the show will have a lot to offer.

The sports events this weekend are more than you can imagine – starting December 10, Asia Golf Tour’s Dubai Open will bring the finest golfers at The Els Club, Dubai Sports City, while ladies can enjoy Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2014, gathering some of the best international female golfers at Emirates Golf Club. The finals for International Premier Tennis League 2014 start on Wednesday at Hamdan Sports Complex and will feature some of the most popular names in tennis today – Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, and more. And the fifth edition of Dubai Spinney’s 92 Cycling Challenge will be held on Friday at Nad Al Sheba Cycle Track, so if you are fans, don’t miss it!

These are just a small part of what’s coming to Dubai this weekend – entertainment, sport, art, and music. And while some will prepare for the Christmas holidays, others can visit Global Village, which offers fun for the kids all day.
