Dr. Oz emphasize again on green coffee bean extract

Green coffee bean extract has been much discussed lately on the Internet. A major coffee company has begun selling a beverage with the extract and various websites are marketing green coffee products for losing weight. But the question is why.

“Green coffee” refers to the unroasted seeds (beans) of Coffea fruits. The coffee we drink is produced after the raw beans go through a variety of processes. It contains hundreds of components that may have potential and independent pharmacological effects.

During the past few months, DubaiChronicle.com published a number of articles about the freshly discovered weight loss powers of the green coffee bean extract. Many readers expresses serious interest and the topic still remains hot:

Coffee is a source of caffeine but coffee’s effects on weight loss have been attributed to its other components, such as chlorogenic acid, quinides, lignans, and trigonelline.

Chlorogenic acid inhibits an enzyme that promotes the formation of glucose (sugar) in the liver. Therefore, if you consume coffee for a long time, the chlorogenic acid in it may at least partly reduce the risk of glycemic disorders, like diabetes.

It may also be the reason for coffee’s anti-obesity effects. Studies have indicated that chlorogenic acid slows absorption of fat and activates metabolism of extra fat. Unfortunately, roasted coffee beans don’t serve as a good source of chlorogenic acid. After green coffee beans are roasted they lose not only their bitter taste, but also a significant portion of chlorogenic acid.

The most recent study on green coffee beans was published in January 2012 in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity journal. The researchers monitored a group of 16 adults who were considered overweight. They received a special green coffee bean extract of chlorogenic acids at different dosages for 12 weeks.

The extract the researchers used contained an ingredient called GCA, which contains a standard green coffee extract of total chlorogenic acids and other substances that are famous for their antioxidant health benefits. The subjects lost an average of almost 18 pounds.

As a result, many companies and websites have prized this supplement and even advertise similar fat-burning substances of their own. But you should always be careful when buying unregulated supplements online. When you buy supplements, make sure you look at the list of ingredients – the chlorogenic acid extract in the green coffee bean supplement can be listed as any of the following:

  • GCA® (green coffee antioxidant)
  • Svetol®

Also, pills that contain 45% chlorogenic acid or more are okay, but capsules with less than this amount have not been tested in studies that demonstrate weight loss. The recommended dosage of this supplement is 400mg, three times a day – 30 minutes before each meal. Nevertheless, some clinical trials have also demonstrated success with 200mg.

Don’t buy a bottle that doesn’t list ingredients. If you see the word “pure,” and you don’t see Svetol® or GCA® just don’t take it.

The green coffee bean extract is suitable for most healthy adults, over the age of 18, who want to lose weight. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have an allergy to coffee or caffeine, you should not take it. Since the supplement is new and there is no research on its effects on children, children should not take this supplement.

You should also keep in mind the fact that no pill is more effective than maintaining a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet.
