Motorbike users in Dubai will not have to pay any parking fee, the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said.

According to Al Bayan newspaper, the RTA said motorbikes do not take much parking space and are usually parked near the sidewalks, with their drivers mostly around them.

According to an RTA survey of 70,000 prepaid parking slots last week, motorcycles occupied just 20 slots. The body pointed out that the rate of use of motorcycles for prepaid parking is negligible, and therefore the RTA doesn’t fine them.

However, RTA said it might consider dedicated parking slots for two-wheelers in open parking spaces in the future.

There are more than 200,000 registered motorcycles in Dubai. RTA registered ‬ 204,361 motorbikes in the first 11 months of 2010.
