Why do mixed infrastructure projects go wrong?

Too often, mixed infrastructure projects in the Middle East have been bogged down by poor planning, ineffective policy and a lack of communication between the different stakeholders on a project including but not limited to; land owners, project owners, consultants and contractors.

The result can often mean costly contract disputes and project delays – bad news for everyone concerned. However, it doesn’t have to be this way, with the help of technology available today, it could and should soon be a thing of the past.

Road, rail and building projects all share the same land space, they need to interact with each other and as a result need integrated planning, data management and project collaboration, enabling all stakeholders to share information effectively irrespective of their responsibility or discipline within the project.

What is the solution?
Standards, processes and technology, all available today, can improve how different project team members “talk” to one another during the planning, design and construction phases of infrastructure projects. Enabling project leaders to save time and effort, improve efficiency and reduce the risk they are exposed to on projects by making technology work for them.

Bentley Systems, is a leading provider of technology in this field and will be discussing the issue of ‘integrated rail, road and building project implementation’ in depth with other industry professionals at next month’s MENA Rail 2009 conference, a strategic annual outlook on the MENA rail industry taking place May 11-14 in Dubai.

Phil Jackson, a Principal Consultant at Bentley, is one of the leading speaker’s at the event and said “integrating project delivery is about choosing technologies that work together and delivering true co-ordination – construction companies, transport authorities and consultants alike should attend MENA Rail to learn how mixed infrastructure projects can be delivered on spec, on time and on budget”.
