A total of 44 Metro trains will run on the Red Line from September 9 next year, a senior official of the Rail Agency in the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Thursday, reported Khaleej Times.
UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the trial run of Dubai Metro on the 20th of September, which ran for 11km between Jebel Ali Station and Ibn Battuta Station.
Sheikh Mohammed also commissioned the Metro’s internet wireless service (Wi-Fi), which covers all Red Line and Green Line carriages. The service, provided by Du, will allow passengers to use their laptops during their journeys.
Once completed, the Dh15.5 billion Dubai Metro will be the world’s largest automated driverless metro system with Green and Red Lines extending 75km, consisting of 47 stations, including 10 underground stations. There are over 24,000 engineers, technicians and workers involved in the construction of the project.
The Red Line will cover Jebel Ali, Shaikh Zayed Road, Union Square in Deira, and Rashidiya up to the Dubai International Airport. The depot at Rashidiya can accommodate as many as 64 trains and the entire Dubai Metro fleet will consist of 131 trains. Four metro trains are arriving every month from Japan and nearly 500 metres of Metro tracks are being laid everyday. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rail Agency, Abdul Majid Al Khaja, said the car park facility being built at the Al Ghusais station, under the Green Line jurisdiction, will accommodate up to 6,000 cars. The Green Line will be ready by 2010.
