Sharjah International Book Fair 2009 opens today
His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, opened here today at Sharjah Expo Centre the 28th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair 2009, under the theme ‘In love with reading word’.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Sharjah Ruler said that “this is an exceptional day due to its special theme”, wishing that the show would meet taste of readers. Sheikh Sultan referred to other occasions, which promote culture in Sharjah, citing the Sharjah Theatrical Days, which represent the artistic and intellectual creativity spirit.
Sheikh Sultan paid a tribute to Yusuf Al Aidabi, who had been playing a pivotal role in the previous book fairs, adding that he passed the torch to the new generation of youth who learnt much from him.
Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais, Director General of the Culture and Information Department, thanked Sheikh Sultan on his sustained unlimited support to the culture.
Sheikh Sultan signed a number of copies of his new book “Sard Al Zat” literally means in English ‘autobiography’. The book is about life of a young man. The Sharjah ruler then cut the ribbon, declaring the book fair officially opens. 440 publishing houses from 23 Arab countries, 178 foreign publishing houses from 26 foreign countries are taking part at the event, which showcases over 110, 000 titles at 530 pavilions at four major halls.
