2012 welcomes newcomer Morocco to the billionaires club.
Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud tops the Arab billionaires list with a fortune of $18 billion
Forbes has just revealed the Arab billionaires ranking, composed of 36 distinctive billionaires from across the Arab world with a combined total net worth of $121.3 billion, improving on last year’s figure of $117.6 billion.
Topping the ranking for the second year running is the Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud with a fortune of $18 billion, followed in second place by Lebanese-Brazilian billionaire Joseph Safra with $13.8 billion to his name. Through this prestigious ranking, Forbes Middle East aims to highlight the inspirational stories of the region’s Arab billionaires, as well as the challenges and obstacles overcome on the road to success.
Both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Lebanon led the way on this ranking with eight billionaires each. Despite recent political turmoil, Egypt was runner up with seven billionaires, followed by the stable United Arab Emirates with a total of four. However, this year’s major headline was newcomer to the billionaires club, Morocco, which entered the ranking with three billionaires: Miloud Chaabi, Othman Benjelloun and Anas Sefrioui.
Kuwait ranked sixth with two billionaires, Bassam and Kutayba Alghanim, and it should be noted that Kuwait’s wealthy Al-Kharafi family were removed from the ranking following a formal request from the Kharafi Group. Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Sudan also featured in the ranking with one billionaire each. Read more

Dubai was the third official venue to host Vienna Opera Ball
The 56th Vienna Opera Ball opened with a heady mix of culture, glamour and politics in the Austrian capital on the 16th of February. The 84-year-old Roger Moore and Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen were Austrian entrepreneur Richard Lugner’s special guests at this year’s Opera Ball. Sports stars were also drawn to the spectacular event, with former German tennis great Boris Becker and ex-footballing compatriot Lothar Matthaus making their first visits.
The political world was also in evidence, with much of the Austrian government enjoying a a break from the woes of the eurozone. President Heinz Fischer invited UN chief Ban Ki-moon after a day of intense talks about the crisis in Syria. The secretary-general of the United Nations, praised the ball as a “celebration of Austrian music culture”.

In the United States, the Grammys weekend kicked off in full force on Friday night, with Paul McCartney being honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year.
An annual tradition honoring entertainers, 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year gala shares a yearly look on who contribute exceptional artistic achievements and philanthropic work this year the event is held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
This year, the gala was held only days prior to the Grammy Awards and had some big artists joining the event in honoring Paul McCartney.
The evening wasn’t just about chatting up the new Hollywood Star recipient as there are plenty of performances slated too. Tony Bennett, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, James Taylor and Neil Young are hit the stage.
The musicians cueing up to salute Paul McCartney at MusiCares were nervous enough about doing justice to their hero’s classics. The legendary musician, the biggest big shot snagged in the event’s 22-year history, was celebrated for his music and philanthropy.
McCartney, 69, took the stage and charged into rousing versions of Magical Mystery Tour and Junior’s Farm, setting a high bar for an evening of distinctive covers by diverse admirers.
