Dubai-based global entrepreneur donates $25 million to Boston University

September 23, 2011 · Leave a Comment.........

The decades after the Second World War were a golden age for American universities. They established themselves to be among the best in the world, and pioneered fields such as technology and biomedical research. In recent years, however, universities in the US have entered a period of uncertainty. Budget cuts and global financial meltdown have all eaten into university endowments, while internally, university administrations and faculty, renowned for their enterprise and innovation, have been beset by institutional rigidities. “In the face of proliferating scientific discoveries, mounting interest in non-western societies, and new awareness of the cultural achievements of women and minorities, we are no longer sure what knowledge and skills a liberal education should foster,” says Charles Dellheim, director of Kilachand College. With this in mind, Boston University’s Kilachand College is taking a bold and ambitious approach to the big issues facing higher education: Our goal is to help redefine liberal education for a new century. Following the success of last year’s ‘Donate Your Bag’ charity campaign, Dubai Ladies Club, a member at Dubai Women Establishment, today announced the official launch of ‘Donate Your Bag And Accessories’ for 2011-2012.

Launched in 2009 – by Dubai Ladies Club in collaboration with Reem and Hind Beljafla of DAS Collection – ‘Donate your Bag’ is an annual charity campaign where ladies are invited to donate their gently used designer bags and accessories – such as sunglasses, jewellery and belts – to be sold at a special Charity Sale in mid-2012. All donations and funds raised will be dedicated to Dubai Cares.

Muna bin Kalli, Executive Director of Dubai Ladies Club said: “We are pleased to launch the ‘Donate your bag’ initiative for a third consecutive year. This initiative reflects our commitment to develop and lead projects that will positively contribute to the society as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility.

Bin Kalli added: “I would personally like to invite all ladies to use this charitable event as a pretext for spring cleaning their closets and donate some of their previously used designer items for a noble cause. This way people can extend support to charity without heavily hitting their pockets.”

Moreover, once again, Dubai Ladies Club has partnered with Aramex, who will provide interested donators a complimentary collection service to simplify the process for the ladies that cannot find the time to drop off their designer bags & accessories directly at Dubai Ladies Club; Aramex will have their contribution collected directly from the their doorsteps. To make a booking, ladies may speak to one of Dubai Ladies Club Customer Service Representatives on +971 4 349 9922 or email info@dubailadiesclub.com.

In previous years, the ‘Donate Your Bag’ campaign has received several pieces that were brand new or barely used. The exhibition displayed a variety of luxury brands such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Fendi. In 2009, over 400 bags were collected of which 150 of the best authenticated pieces were shortlisted to be part of an exhibition at Dubai Ladies Club. Over AED80,000 were raised from the sale of the bags and the full amount was donated to Dubai Autism Center. In 2010, over 600 bags were collected of which 100 of the best authenticated pieces were shortlisted to be part of the charity sale. Over AED60,000 were raised from the sale of the bags and the full amount was donated to Mohammed Bin Rashid Charitable Foundation.

The Dubai Ladies Club is keen to continue launching programs and pioneering initiatives, to emphasis on its commitment to its responsibilities towards the community that contributes to spread the spirit of solidarity and fraternity among all members of society from different cultures and nationalities.
