Art Dubai Returns for the Seventh Time to Turn Dubai into an Art Hub

For the seventh time, Art Dubai will turn the City of Gold into an international art hub. The fair will be held from March 20th to the 23rd. In it, will participate 75 galleries from 30 different countries. The total number of artists whose works will be showcased is more than 500. About half of them come from the Middle East or South Asia. However, there are many galleries and artists from Europe and America.
The event was officially opened today by the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan Bi Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The price made a tour at the exhibition, viewing the halls which will showcase the works of many artists over the next few days.
The opening of the fair was also attended by the Director General of HH Dubai Ruler’s Court Mohammed Al Shaibani, the Secretary General of the Executive Council in Dubai Abdulla Al Shaibani, as well as the Director General of Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing Hilal Al Marri.
In addition, the event will be also visited by many other famous figures from various spheres. Among them are writer Mourid Barghouti, musician Andre Vida, political scientist Dr Abdul Khaleq Abdullah and the ex-singer of REM Michael Stipe. According to the director of the event Antonia Carver, Art Dubai is now being regarded as the largest annual art conference on the globe. That is why the organizers have made the decision to expand its reach and invite people from other spheres.
Art Dubai 2013 bears the name “It Means This” and it will celebrate the return of Marker. This is a special section of the exhibition which is organized by Bisi Silva. This year, it will have a West African theme. The section will offer different scenes from all over the region and it will consist of five spaces. They will all showcase the works of various artists.
Among the key highlights of the seventh edition of Art Dubai is Shaikha Manal Little Artists programme. It is brand new and it will focus on kids on ages between 3 and 14. The programme will offer various workshops and tours to children. Also, the little artists will have the chance to make a shadow puppet theatre.
Art lovers not only in Dubai, but in the whole world can stay updated on all the art news thanks to a special radio station. Behind it is Fari Bradley, who is a popular radio presenter and producer. The radio will air interviews with Art Dubai participants, organizers and many others.
In addition, this year Art Dubai will offer a VIP programme for museum groups and collectors. It will consist of visits to Abu Dhabi, Doha and other local spots, as well as meetings with local collectors and artists. Also, participants in the VIP programme will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of Burj Khalifa. However, other visitors of the exhibition can also go on similar tours. On them, they will learn more about the displayed works, the Sculpture Park and the Art Dubai Projects.

The Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE), an agency of the Department of Economic Development and organizers of Dubai Shopping Festival, has announced the DSF 2013 Photography Award for exceptional photography in recognition of the contributions made by press photographers.
The DSF Photography Award was instituted to honour press photographers for their creativity in capturing the essence of DSF through images. The DSF Photography Award acknowledges the important role played by photography and the great dedication of local press photographers to their noble profession. DSF 2013 is being held from January 3 to February 3.
Only press photographers are eligible to take part in the Award. The categories for this year are DSF Celebrations and DSF Shopping. Photographs in the Celebrations category should ideally reflect the theme of Dubai Shopping Festival – ‘One World, One Family, One Festival’. Additionally, the images should cover the multicultural aspect of Dubai and DSF in the form of visitors, tourists, and families.
Entries in the ‘Shopping’ category should highlight the various shopping opportunities during DSF and capture the excitement of shopping in Dubai’s numerous luxurious malls, souqs, and streets.
The winner will receive a trophy and prize money of US $ 3000, the runner-up will receive US $ 2000, and the third prize winner carries home a purse of US $ 1000.

Abu Dhabi based production company Image Nation is celebrating this week as its latest co-production, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, passes the $100 million mark in worldwide box office sales.
The film was financed and presented by the Participant Media/ Imagenation Fund in association with Fox Searchlight, which is distributing the film worldwide. It premiered in London in February this year, and has since travelled the world, including the UAE, receiving much acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Read more

Emirates airline tunes up to create global harmony
Emirates airline, which recently launched its new global brand platform Hello Tomorrow, is aiming to strike a chord with music fans around its network by asking them to help create the ultimate musical mash up.
The airline’s Harmony campaign invites participants to interact with a specially-commissioned musical composition, which has been recorded by professional musicians playing traditional instruments from around the world, such as the harp, Taiko drum, bass guitar, saxophone, Shekere, Oudht and Indian Flute. Canon Middle East announces winners of “My Earth, My Lens” photo competition
Canon Middle East, a leader in imaging solutions, has recently announced the winners of ‘My Earth, My Lens’ – a photo competition that the company launched on March 31st in line with its celebration of Earth Hour 2012.
The competition is part of Canon’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and invited participants to capture powerful images of nature – ranging from photographs of the ocean to pictures of gardens. These needed to be accompanied by a photo caption that best captured the essence of the image.
Dina El Seyoufy, a photographer from Cairo, was picked as the top winner for the region-wide competition and will walk away with a Canon Powershot A2300. Dina’s photograph was captioned “Sun straggling to shine on a winter cloudy day” and the shot was taken with Canon’s S95 camera.
The second position was taken by Meriem Chafai from the UAE. Meriem’s photograph was entitled “Palm of Life” and was captured using Canon’s D1100 camera. Her prize includes Canon’s POWERSHOT SX230 HS BLU camera.
The third position was taken by Mowafaq Abaneh from Jordan. Mowafaq’s shot was entitled “Fields of flowers” and was captured using Canon’s IXUS 130 camera. His prize includes Canon’s IXUS 115 HS BLU camera.
Mai Youssef, Corporate Communications Manager, Canon Middle East, said: “At Canon we are always trying to inspire people’s creativity and innovation and we are very pleased by the response we have received for this competition. We are committed to support the budding artistic talent in the region. At the same time, this competition aims to combine the power of image with awareness around sustainable environments. We hope that through this competition more people have come to appreciate the natural beauty around them.”
The initiative complements Canon’s celebration of its 10 year anniversary in the Middle East, with CSR a major aspect of the celebrations.

Mohamed Kanoo’s second solo exhibition debuts at Meem Gallery

Kanoo’s first solo exhibition held at Meem Gallery in 2009 displayed his Shemaghart collection
Meem Gallery is proud to present Mohamed Kanoo’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, displaying his recent work. Fun w/Fen presents the artist’s humorous interpretation of topical issues including religion, culture, politics and popular culture. The exhibition features works such as Abayya Army and the Red Balloon, Noor (Light), and Henna Stop Sign. Many of his recent works also pays homage to a number of artists Kanoo draws inspiration from, such as in works like Allah, which presents four small incisions on a large silver canvas, an immediate interpretation of the pioneering conceptual work of the 1950’s Argentinian born artist Lucio Fontana; AraMao, which is based on Andy Warhol’s famous portrait of Chairman Mao; and his personal interpretation of Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa, where he replaces Mount Fuji with Dubai’s Burj Al Arab.
