Bulgarian industry has lost many of its positions as manufacturer and exporter since the beginning of 1990s. Structural reforms during the transition period from socialism to capitalism resulted in tremendous markets’ losses, lack of innovations, low product quality, inefficient organizational and manufacturing structure. However, the situation has dramatically changed on the upside after the end of the economic crisis of 1996.
Industry growth in Bulgaria during the last decade has been driven by two main factors: firstly, the increase in the effectiveness of use of the existing capital and labor resources, resulting from the financial stabilization, privatization, liberalization and institutional reforms and secondly, the gradual recovery of the physical capital lost during the transition period through a pick-up in domestic and foreign investment.
