The Times Higher Education will be publishing this coming Wednesday the 12th edition of its World University Rankings. Ahead of the release, Dubai Chronicle has received insiders information that the United Arab Emirates is represented in the rankings for the first time this year. The United Arab Emirates University and American University of Sharjah are ranked in the top 800 (bands 501-600 and 601-800 respectively).

UAE is one of several countries to have made its debut in this year’s World University Rankings. This achievement is in part due to expanding the ranking to include 801 best universities and 70 countries.

The newly expanded Times Higher Education World University Rankings indicates great development in the MENA region. By entering the rankings to the world’s top 800 universities, which represent just the top four per cent of higher education institutions in the world, a handful of regional universities demonstrate a potential to compete on the world stage.

THE World University Rankings will feature universities in 70 countries, with 29 new countries included this year. Countries entering this year include Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Latvia, Oman, Qatar and the Ukraine. While the US remains the world leader when it comes to elite universities, its dominance has been eroded this year. More details will be revealed once the THE World University Rankings will be officially published.
