It’s mid-January, which means one thing – you don’t have much time left to get the best travel deals of the season. In fact, this is probably the best time of the year to travel, even though it might seem like not the most popular idea for travelers. But there are several things that will make you consider traveling in January.

The perfect timing

Now is the perfect time between the winter holidays and the spring vacations, when travel is less common, even among frequent travelers. The fewer people at the airplanes and in hotels are either business travelers, or retirees, who usually pick the slower tourist seasons for holiday breaks.

You can save up to 25% off

unnamed-2During the so-called “dead weeks” of January, when the season is at its slowest, you can save up to 25% off the total cost of your journey, at least according to TripAdvisor estimates. For example, if a week-long trip to New York costs around $3,270 on average, it will be $1,950, if you visit the city between January 17 and 24.

Hotel rates are dropping, because most people have spent most of their savings over the holidays. They either don’t travel at all, or they are looking for only affordable options such as cheaper hotels and motels. As a result, many hotels cut their rates in order to attract more guests. And typically, airfares are seeing their lowest prices of the year between January 15 and March 15. Many carriers launch sales and offer discounted flights and it’s not only about budget airlines. The Middle Eastern Emirates or Qatar Airways will fly you for less from and to every destination in the world.

There are two exceptions however – many resorts, hotels and airlines would raise their prices just before Valentine’s Day. And ski resorts are insanely expensive right now. Hilton is running a 33% off any weekend offer until the end of January.

Smaller crowds

Herds of thousands tourists flock in hotels, beaches, airports, and attractions. The noise and commotion caused by partying youngsters and crying babies, may easily ruin your entire vacation. But also think of the long lines, where you can wait for hours (or days for a visa, for example).

You can visit even the hottest destinations

Have you ever dreamed of visiting Paris, Thailand’s paradise island of Phuket or the charming Italy? Usually, such trips cost thousands of dollars at peak seasons, but right now, you will find discounts of up to 50%, especially on prepaid travel packages for two or for families. Thailand is generally cheaper than a few years ago, as it’s still recovering from last year’s protests, but some areas are increasingly becoming popular among Chinese tourists, so prices there won’t be as low.

A good excuse to travel to the other end of the world

Right now it’s summer below the equator, so January gives you a great excuse to explore South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. There are really amazing places and things you can see, but before booking, consider the rainy seasons in some countries and areas. And while rain in London is just another day in London, a downpour in Peru’s Sacred Valley will be a nightmare, as all the great things to do and see are outdoors.
