Founded in 1993, the World Travel Awards are known as “the Oscars of the travel industry”. The ranking is based on the votes of thousands of high-end tourists and travel professionals. This year, people voted Yorkshire, England “Europe’s Leading Destination”, and (maybe not a coincidence) its marketing campaign was also recognized as the best. Well, certainly, it was the most effective. The Acropolis in Greece was chosen as the best attraction. With over 15 nominations in different categories, Vila Vita Parc in Portugal won “Europe’s Most Romantic Resort”. Luxury travelers may consider also Rome Calieri by Waldorf Astoria in the same category.

For the third year in a row, Disneyland Paris is chosen best themed resort on the continent. Previously, the category was “leading themed park” and back then, Disneyland Paris tended to win all the same.

Forte Village Resort in Italy was selected “Europe’s Leading Resort”, among several other nominees for the European Travel Awards – “Leading Sports Resort”, “Leading Villa”, as well as Italy’s leading resort and hotel suite. Hilton was chosen “Europe’s Leading Hotel Brand”, the first European award for Hilton since 2004. But the best hotel remains Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, taking the prestigious award twice. Top cruise line is Norwegian Cruise Line, while Lisbon is the most preferred destination for cruises. Europe’s leading airport is Zurich Airport in Switzerrland and Germany’s Lufthanza is the best airline in Europe.

The World Travel Awards is a global event, comprising of regional gala ceremonies taking place in key locations for the travel industry. This year, the tour began at JW Marriott Dubai in May and continued to Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso, where on August 2, the prestigious ceremony was held. The next stop is this Saturday at Centro Cultural Itchimbia in Quinto, Equador, where the awards for South & Central America will be given. In October, New Delhi in India will welcome the ceremony, followed by the sunshine island of Anguilla, and Morocco for Grand Final on November 29th.
