Residential and commercial buildings in Dubai will get precise map coordinates as part of Dubai Municipality’s Smart Geo Addressing System. The first phase of new address system is launching in May with distributing the geographic coordinates to shops, restaurants and residents.

Dubai Municipality has designed the new system in order to help the police and the civil defence to respond to emergencies within minutes. In fact, the new, more precise addresses will be helpful for residents and businesses, as well, once they are fully integrated. However, this won’t happen until the project receives approval from the Federal National Council. Until then, the Municipality will start an information campaign among the population by distributing the map coordinates and brochures, which will explain their exact use and the benefit from it. The first phase of the project is launching in May. The recording of the coordinates of all 130,000 buildings is almost completed, so soon residents and businesses will be able to receive their unique geographical coordinate.

The project is estimated to cost around AED 5 million. It includes distributing and setting up brand new plates across multiple locations and public spaces. By 2020, the authority should fully integrate the new address system and assign every residential and commercial building a brand-new, precise address. Besides serving as a helpful tool in police’s everyday work, the system will provide a smarter, easier way for people to find every single place on their smartphones. The Municipality has already introduced its electronic map application, Makani, which is available in Arabic and English on Android and iOS smartphones. The app is free and allows you to find every building in Dubai, including commercial and residential buildings, government organizations and authorities, parks, warehouse, public buildings, and so on. For now, the different apartments located in a building won’t be assigned with their own map coordinates, but the Municipality is searching for practical solutions.
