Cultural Events and More This Weekend in Dubai


How do you plan to spend your upcoming weekend in Dubai? There are plenty of entertainment options to choose from, but the Dubai Art Season has launched, which allows us to look at the artistic and cultural life hidden beneath the city’s skyscraper environment. Family and sports events, DJs and opera concerts, fashion and lifestyle shows – choose your favourite events and make the most of your weekend.

HH Sheikh Majid at SIKKA 2011 (1)To promote the city and the region as a rich art and cultural center, preparing for the upcoming World Expo 2020, the Dubai Art Season has started last week with SIKKA 2014 Art Fair, which showcases an array of programs and art installations at the Al Fahdi Historical Neighborhood. The month-long season of art and culture activities, exhibitions and workshops also features the third edition of Design Days Dubai, the leading regional fair for collectable furniture and design items. It is held from 17th to 21th March at The Venue in Downtown Dubai and attracts not only wealthy collectors, but also design, art and style lovers.

On Wednesday, the largest contemporary art fair in the Middle East is kicking off at Madinat Jumeirah – the eight edition of Art Dubai, which will include an extensive programme of exhibitions, commissioned projects and performances, the popular Global Art Forum, as well as workshops and tours for children and students. Dubai Art Season will also feature the highly anticipated Gulf Film Festival and the Middle East Film and Comic Con, which will take place next month. Most of the events and exhibitions will be free for children and student groups, and regular tickets are AED 50.

Dubai is well-known for its love for fashion and style and this week, you can attend the Pakistani designer fashion exhibition at G22, Bay Avenue at Business Bay. The Spring Fashion Exhibition will allow you to enjoy and shop some of the finest collections of trendy apparel, accessories and fantastic jewelry. It starts on Thursday and will continue for three days, showcasing 25 Pakistani designers.

Another event ladies will definitely love to attend to is the Star Style Search at Deira City Centre and their weekend-long competition, where you can show your favourite outfit for the Spring/Summer 2014 season and win a shopping prize of up to AED 10,000. The lucky winner will also be invited to a photo shoot, which will be featured in one of the popular regional magazines.

There will be several sports events taking place this week, as well – the second leg of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series 2014, with a star-studded line-up including 11 world champions and 8 Olympic gold medalists, will be held at the Hamdan Sports Complex from Thursday to Saturday. Or you can head to the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, where you will be able to see the finest purebred Arabians during the 10th edition of Dubai International Horse Fair or enjoy seeing them in action at the 3-day Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship.

Another event which unites the love for beautiful horses and performance arts is the spectacular show Cavalia, which will be an amazing experience, especially for the kids. It includes 43 horses, 30 performing artists, acrobats, dancers and riders from all around the world, music, visual effects, and a lot more. The event will take place in nine different tents at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from Thursday until Saturday, 29th March. Tickets range from AED 150 to AED 695. You can also take the children to a dedicated kids’ show – the Gruffalo’s Child Theatre Show is on stage at the Madinat Theatre right now.

For ten days, the inner streets of Al Ghurair Centre in Deira will transform into a colourful open stage where amazing performers will stun the audience with their spectacular acts and stunts. Starting Thursday, Dub Fest 2014 is an international street theatre and comedy fair and will feature live musicians, Guinness world record holders, ex-Cirque Du Soliel performers, break dancers, flamethrowers, tight-rope walkers, and many more. There will also be beautiful 3D chalk painting, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

House and electronic music fans are gathering this Friday at Atlantis where one of the best DJs in the world is coming for an exclusive 3-hour set. The Space Ibiza resident and one of the rave veterans, Carl Cox will be hitting the decks at Atlantis beach, supported by a popular line-up of artists – the DJs Sharam, Yousef and Gilles Peterson, as well as Smokingroove, David Craig, and JAD. The doors open at 6.00 pm and tickets will be AED 200 (and AED 250 at the door), VIP passes – AED 400.
