Both, Sony and Microsoft, chose to release their next-gen consoles this month, just weeks ahead of the busiest shopping season. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was launched on November 15, while Microsoft’s Xbox One will hit the stores this week, on November 22. As you probably know, this year Black Friday will take place on November 29. That is practically days after the launch of these two products. This fact is a bit concerning to shoppers, since they do not know whether they will be offered any PS4 or Xbox One Black Friday deals.
Therefore, we have decided to help and give you an insight on how promotions work in the gaming industry. For that purpose, we have looked back at previous PlayStation and Xbox consoles and the marketing practices used in past years.
Don’t Expect Much
Do not think that there will be many Xbox One and PlayStation 4 deals during Black Friday 2013 (or during the entire holiday season). These are new products, which were just released on the market. This means that consumers will be willing to buy them even if they are not discounted. In addition, they need to gain a good momentum before the companies behind them decide to slash their prices.
Nevertheless, there will be some PS4 and Xbox One holiday deals. They will be mainly bundled offers. However, they will only allow you to save a modest amount of money. So, if you do not really need all the extra accessories and games, you probably shouldn’t buy. Other Black Friday offers you may expect will involve things like protection plans or free credit.
The biggest deal, however, will actually be to find a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One console in stock! Most retailers that offered PS4 have already ran out of stock. Things are not likely to change by Black Friday or, as a matter of fact, by the end of 2013. Therefore, if you can’t wait to get a new gaming device, you should invest in the first available offer you spot.
First Discount Prognosis
If we need to make prognosis, we will simply say “Good things come to those who wait.” It’s a banality, but it is true. Based on observations on the previous generations of the two consoles, it will take a few months before you see the first big price cuts on Microsoft’s Xbox One and on Sony’s PlayStation 4.
For example, PS3 was launched in November 2006. After about four months, it got a more major discount of 9%. In other words, the new PlayStation may have a March sale and it will come at a price of around $364.
It will take a little longer, before gamers will have the chance to enjoy a big Xbox One discount. When Xbox 36o was released in November 2005, its price went down with 10% after five whole months. Judging on that, the latest Xbox will probably reach a price of $449.99 in April 2014.
If you can wait, do wait. However, those, who are in a hurry, should buy early while the consoles are still in stock.
