Today, smartphones and tablet PCs are used for communication, information, entertainment and work. In addition, a rising number of people are using mobile devices to do their shopping.

A research by Nielsen has found that mobile consumers who rely on their gadget for online shopping activities have increased with an average of about 5% over the last one year. According to the study, 84% of the people who own mobile devices use them to do their shopping.

In addition, the PC is no longer the number one tool for online shopping. Tablets and smartphones have taken its place. More than 25% of all mobile consumers prefer to shop on their mobile gadgets and not on their personal computer.  Online retailers such as Microsoft Store are on the top of the web traffic lists.

The research also examined trends in mobile shopping by separating consumers in different categories like gender, age and income. The research found  that the number of male and female mobile shoppers is now the same. Around half of men and women, who own mobile device, use them to shop. In comparison, last year, female mobile shoppers were only 44%, while male – 56%.

In terms of age, the most active group is that of users under 45 years. They make up 57% of all mobile shoppers. Impressive is also the group of consumers under 34 year. About 34% of them use their mobile electronic devices to shop.

The most active age group in 2013, however, is that of mobile users aged between 25 and 24. They now amount to 28%, which is a rise with 4% in the past 12 months. Right after them are 55+ mobile consumers. One quarter of them have the habit of shopping with their mobile gadgets.

When it comes to household incomes, mobile consumers with low or middle incomes are more active mobile shoppers compared to those with more disposable income. People who earn between $50,000 and $100,000 a year show the most interest in mobile shopping (38%). Those with less than $50,000 are second with 21%.

What we can deduce is that the average modern mobile shopper is between 25 and 34 years old and makes between $50,000 – $100,000.
