Women’s fashion goes military and masculine

The New York Fashion Week kicked off last week and it again managed to attract the world’s most famous fashion designers and fashionistas. The show was also attended by a large number of celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. Everyone was interested to see the trends for seasons Fall/Winter 2013 in women’s fashion. What they got was a huge surprise.

Military & Masculine

Instead of feminine dresses and delicate accessories, the runway was attacked by military and masculine outfits and lots of dark colours. Designer Max Azria offered metallic jackets that were ready for the battlefield. Prabal Gurung went even further creating an all-military collection. In it, harness and leather dominated. However, the silhouettes were quite feminine and stylish.

Unfortunately, that was not the case with the collection of Creatures of the Wild which was unusually masculine. The jackets were quite big and boxy and the colours were very dark – from black and gray to brown and navy. To brighten things up, the designers of the collection often combined these tones with ivory and even orange.

Alexander Wang, on the other hand, kept things almost entirely grey. In addition, the designer had tied up the hands of the models with padded gloves or bondage.

Even Rebecca Taylor presented edgy outfits. Taylor is famous for her cheery and sweet designs. This time round, however, she added some toughness to her collection with rough jackets and tweed skirts.

Monique Lhuillier, who is known for her red carpet dresses, managed to escape from the masculine and military trend. Despite that she too did not offer anything sunny. Lhuillier’s gowns were very dramatic with their rich colour and fierce necklines.

Some Femininity

Although, roughness ruled the first days of NWFW 2013, later some designers managed to brighten up the atmosphere with some vivid colours and elegant silhouettes. Among them was Trina Turk. She offered one of the most feminine designs in New York. In addition, deep green and plum colours in her collection were a like a breath of fresh air for everyone.

One of the big trends in Fall/Winter 2013 is the high slit. A number of designers used very high slits on both skirts and dresses. Among them were Kimberly Orvitz and Richard Chai. It seems that soon it will be hard for ladies to find a slit-clean gown or skirt.

A few other designers included some femininity in their collections using colours like pink and turquoise. The leather trends seen in the early days of the show was somewhat balanced with other sheerer fabrics like satin and chiffon. However, the overall fashion tendencies in New York were military, masculine, dark, boxy and edgy.

One of the exceptions was Tadashi Shoji’s Fall 2013 fashion show~:
