The 2013 Grammy nominations are officially announced! Like every year, among the nominees there are some surprises and some old faces. But there seems to be a new trend developing in the modern music industry. After Adele’s reign on the 2012 Grammys, this year it is mainly male and indie-pop artist who dominate the nominations for the prestigious award.

Among the most nominated musicians were Frank Ocean and the group fun. (No, there is no mistake in the spelling).

Singer Frank Ocean made the headlines with his amazing debut album called “Channel Orange”. Also, Ocean was the first R&B artist who openly said that he was homosexual, which won him the support and admiration of many of his talented colleagues. Ocean is nominated in six different categories among which are some of the most prestigious ones – Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best new Artist.

Indie-pop band fun. was this year’s surprise at the Grammy nominations. The group ruled the charts over the last few months with its hit song “We Are Young”. However, no one expected that the Recording Academy will actually notice them. The guys from fun. received a total of 6 Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

One of the most talked about category is Record of the Year. There Franc Ocean and fun. will battle artists like Kelly Clarkson, Black Keys, indie band Gotye and Taylor Swift.

Swift’s successful album “Red” was not nominated for Album of the Year. However, that is not because it was not appreciated by the Academy, but because the country singer released it too late to be included in the nominations.

Another surprise at the Grammy nominations was the omission of some artists who gained massive popularity in 2012. Among them was Carly Rae Jepsen whose song “Call Me Maybe” couldn’t push her into the categories Song of the Year and best New Artist. British boy band One Direction were also left out of the nominees. In addition, YouTube sensation Psy didn’t manage to impress the Academy with his “Gangnam Style” dance.

But the unexpected verdicts of the Grammy jury didn’t stop here. Artists like Miguel and Ed Sheeran received some precious nominations, even though they got little praise from the critics.

The 2013 Grammy nominations were slowly revealed this Wednesday at a special concert. The event took place at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Host of the show were artists LL Cool J and Taylor Swift. At the concert performed many musicians like Maroon 5, Band Perry and Dierks Bentley.

The 2013 Grammy Awards may go in history as the year of indie-pop and male artists. Notable indie-pop musicians that may soon take a Grammy home are fun., Florence & the Machine and Gotye. The male domination, on the other hand, was led by Frank Ocean, Mumford & Sons, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 10, 2013 in the famous Staples Center in Los Angeles.
