UAE GEMS students won 30 Cambridge Learner Awards in 2011
- University of Cambridge International examinations ‘Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards’
In an outstanding display of academic excellence, four GEMS school students from the United Arab Emirates out-performed thousands of candidates worldwide.
From the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), the awards recognise the outstanding academic achievements of secondary school students across the world in different regions.
In the U.A.E the awards for the June 2011 Cambridge examinations (Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge International A Level) are known as the H.H Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards. Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 – 16 year olds.
GEMS students received a total of 30 Outstanding Learner awards which is a third of all award winners in the U.A.E. GEMS students topped the U.A.E in 13 examination subjects.

These achievements are a credit to the partnership between GEMS and Cambridge and demonstrate the dedication and commitment of teachers, students and the schools. We look forward to congratulating more learners from GEMS Schools in the near future,” said William Bickerdike, Regional Manager, Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan, University of Cambridge International Examinations
The four students who topped the world in their examination are: Kristina Prilepchanska of Cambridge International School for IGCSE Drama; Bushra Ali of the Westminster School for AS Level English Language; Dilawar Zainab Zohar of Cambridge International School for AS Level Travel and Tourism and Swetha Sabu Gaesan of Cambridge High School in Abu Dhabi for A Level Business Studies.

The Cambridge International School received the highest number of awards in the UAE with a total of 13 awards.
The H.H Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards were established in 2002 by Cambridge International Examination, under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Since inception, 442 awards have been given out, of which GEMS students have won 118.
