In keeping with its commitment to provide Emirati theatre talent a platform to enhance their skills, the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is hosting an Arabic drama script editing workshop from May 24 to June 6, 2011 to be conducted by one of Egypt’s leading theatre experts, Dr Osama Abu Talib.

Organised by Dubai Culture, the workshop is also in line with the recommendations of the judging committee of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre to host training programmes prior to the festival to boost quality standards.

The workshop, aimed to promote excellence in theatre, will help artists increase the quality of their plays which will be showcased at the fifth edition of the Dubai Festival for Youth Theatre. To be held from October 1 to 10, 2011, the Festival focuses on promoting Emirati and Arab theatre artists and enthusiasts by providing a dedicated platform to showcase their talent in addition to sharpening their skills through critique lessons led by experts.

Yasser Al Gergawi, Manager of Performing Arts, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “Over the last four years, Dubai Culture has helped strengthen the theatre landscape of the UAE. Building further on the vision, the drama script editing workshop by Dubai Culture has been designed to encourage budding artists to sharpen one of the most integral skills required in theatre.”

He added: “Dr Osama Abu Talib is a veteran in the regional theatre scene, and it is an honour for Dubai Culture to have him lead the workshop. His expertise and knowledge of theatre will open new doors of knowledge and insights for the participants.”

With a post-graduate in Drama and Criticism, and a PhD in Criticism and Theatre Studies, Dr. Abu Talib has taught in several theatric institutions including The Higher Institution for Theatre in Cairo, the Theatre Department in Sultan Gaboos University, and the Drama and Criticism Department in the Higher College for Theatre in Kuwait.

Open to 25 UAE nationals and Arabic-speaking residents, the drama script editing workshop will be held from 7pm to 10pm at the Dubai Public Library in Al Twar. For more information on the drama scriptwriting workshop, please contact 045155017 or email yasser.algergawi@dubaiculture.ae
