GEMS Education wins ‘Leader in Education’ Award
Honour for nurturing leadership skills in young female students
GEMS Education is the first winner of the Women in Leadership ‘Leader in Education’ award. Held under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Women In leadership awards were presented as a part of the Women in Leadership Forum, 2009.
GEMS Education won the award for its work in honouring exceptional young female students across the network of GEMS Schools through the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Award for Excellence.
The award honours female students who have proven themselves as global citizens, exhibited outstanding leadership qualities, achieved exceptional academic achievements and demonstrated strong commitment to the communities in which they live. It highlights the important role that young female leaders play in GEMS schools as well as the community.
The award was established by GEMS Education in honour of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, wife of the late President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for her contributions to the empowerment of UAE women and in support of her vision to celebrate and support women’s achievements and self determination.
The award was instituted five years ago by GEMS under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT).
The Founder and Chairman of GEMS Education, Mr. Sunny Varkey said: “I am delighted that GEMS has been recognised for the work it has done in promoting leadership in our young female students. The Sheikha Fatima Awards was established to celebrate promising female students in our schools to encourage them to maintain their social commitment as well as academic excellence. We hope that these girls will go on to become future leaders in society.â€
The award winners receive a scholarship for a full year’s tuition at their GEMS School and the award is presented by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan at a gala event each year.
The award, traditionally for GEMS students only in the UAE, is growing in reach and stature, and this year was extended to female students across the Middle East. So far, 114 exceptional young women from GEMS Schools have won the Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Award for Excellence and AED 2.3 million worth of scholarships have been presented.
