Arsenal regains Emirates Cup
Arsenal regained the Emirates Cup on Sunday evening, with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Scottish champions Rangers at The Emirates Stadium in North London.
Arsenal, winners of this tournament in 2007, were relentless from the off and opened the scoring after only two minutes, as 17-year-old Jack Wilshere took full advantage of a delicate flick from Andrey Arshavin to power home. Then just nine minutes later, Eduardo doubled the home sides advantage with a trademark finish after some neat work by youngster Fran Merida.
Rangers, who were obviously shell shocked by the early onslaught, did regain their composure but failed to offer any attacking menace during the remainder of the first half, as one felt that to have any real chance they would need to score before half time which they failed to do.
Whilst Rangers had a mountain to overcome, they never gave up the challenge but the tie was put well and truly beyond them with 18 minutes remaining, as Jack Wilshere grabbed his second of the match and earned himself the accolade of the Emirates Airline Man of the Match for the second day in a row.
This convincing win means Arsenal will now look forward to the start of the premiership season with confidence, after some excellent performances from youngsters and experienced squad members alike.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, commented, “I thought it was a very impressive display with some sharp moves and a good level of creativity in front of goal. I’ve been especially pleased with the performances of Jack Wilshere over the past couple of days because he has shown how much he has progressed over the past 12 months and he clearly has a promising future ahead of him.â€
The annual pre-season tournament also featured Atletico Madrid and the Emirates-sponsored Paris Saint-Germain.
