DSS 2008 Collectors exhibition begins today at Wafi

The Collectors, a unique exhibition of various artefacts and collectibles and a DSS Signature Event in 2008, begins today (July 15) at Wafi, a key sponsor of the summer event.

The eight-day long exhibition is bound to appeal to all memorabilia lovers and even shoppers who would like to have a glimpse of rare collections of coins, photographs, sports and classic cars, ancient Islamic manuscripts, watches, medals, cameras, paintings, stamps and many other collectibles. The Collectors will be open between 10am and 10pm to enable visitors and residents to view the display.

Tshering Idnani, Senior Events Coordinator at Dubai Shopping Festival Office said, “The Collectors is an exciting event because it showcases collections of seemingly miscellaneous objects; but when these are collected from around the world in unbelievable proportions, then the display inherits a special value. The exhibits also demonstrate the efforts taken by the collectors in creating an irreplaceable set of objects, big or small, inexpensive or priceless, but all the same unique in every sense.”

Organised since 2005, the exhibition this year features five international collectors. Wendy Suen from China will display the world’s largest collection of snow globes, Mohamed Yahya Alassiri from Saudi Arabia will present the world’s largest collection of licence plates and rosary beads, and Frank Divendal from Holland will showcase the world’s largest collection of bookmarks. These displays have gained entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Additionally, the world’s second and third largest collections of ‘Do not disturb’ signs will also be showcased by Rainer Weichert from Germany and Edoarado, also from Germany, respectively. Antique lovers can look forward to displays of jewellery, the Holy Quran, cameras, and gramophones.

The display however, does not stop there. Also included are miniature car collectibles, currency bundles from over 60 countries, and the mixed collection of Suhail Zarooni – a well known local collector, consisting of branded miscellaneous items of Starbucks, Swatch, Cartier, James Bond, and even Harry Potter.

A special inclusion in this year’s exhibition is an exhibit of royal family photographs, unseen by most, adding the elegance to what is one of the most entertaining and curious collections exhibited in a Collectors edition.
